For target ammo, go to a local walmart that sells ammo and pray that they have perfecta ammunition in stock. That stuff is a godsend. It's cheaper than any other target ammo, fairly clean, and is still brass cased as opposed to steel/aluminum/etc.

For just range use i'll get something cheap and brass cased like magtech or seller and bellot.
For defense, get any major brand hollow point that your gun cycles reliably. In other words buy a few boxes of whatever it is, and run them all through the gun before using the gun/ammo combo for defense.
Shoot the ammo you keep loaded in the gun for self defense every month or so and buy more so you stay in practice.

.45 ACP only loses about 60 fps going down to a 4" barrel. Not a big deal.
I've seen, in person, what a .45 ACP 230gr Gold Dot will do after penetrating a car windshield. Let's just say I don't carry anything else.
For range shooting, I put Blaser brass through my 1911. It's fucking $120 for 200 rounds though. Shit kills.
