Had a buddy try to sell me his semi auto one for years. Weighs a metric shitload, and is so incredibly front heavy that you feel like you are trying to shoot a brick duct taped to the end of a broom stick.
If it was full auto such things would be positive as they assist with recoil control during full automatic fire. In semi auto the suomi/PPSH family is just stupid uncomfortable to fire, dysmally short ranged, and retardedly front heavy.

Easier than making a closed bolt weapon (having built the latter)
But also not legal.
Now, the fact that my closed bolt weapon could be converted to an open bolt full auto by:
1: removing firing pin retention spring
2:drilling a hole in the bolt and hammer, and inserting a pin through both locking the pin in the forward position.
3: filing down the tripping lever so that instead of a trigger rest it becomes sear up or sear down (aka open bolt)
Is entireley circumstantial, and should I perform the 30 to 45 minutes of work to complete this (illegal) task the gun would just so happen to become full auto with an estimated rate of fire somewhere around 600 rpm (which would also be illegal)
So long story short, my home made vertical feed carbine based on the sten that is closed bstenand semi auto could be converted to full auto with a drill and a hand file in less than an hour, but as of yet has not violated any ATF laws.

Yes, but I only spent 400 bucks and 12 hours on it. But if SHTF I have an unregistered machinegun at my disposal should the circumstances call for it.
So to answer your question, it would have been easier to just make it open bolt/full auto, but thats not legal and I obey the law.
If something happened bad enough to cause the ATF to suffer a critical existential failure then I would have no qualms converting the weapon.
In the meantime, I obey the law because I like my dog alive and my house not burnt down.

A trend i've noticed is that the SMGs with full wooden rifle stocks (KP-31, Beretta 38, MP41) were much more well received and combat worthy than the ones with pistol grips and wire stocks.
