I have a MAS 49/56 imported by Century
now, the receiver obviously says 7.5 real big on the side and the importer marks also say 7.5
but, when I shoot 7.5 French through it, it refuses to cycle properly and the cases come out slightly bulged and very sooty

is there a definitive way to tell if my MAS 49/56 has been converted to .308, some mark somewhere that I'm missing?
were all 49/56s imported by Century converted?

I don't have any .308 to see if they fit in the chamber
>>
>>30027191
Since 308 is smaller it'd still fit anyways. Are you shooting surplus ammo or new production 7.5 French?

Well the 49 and 49/56 are direct gas impingement actions and are notoriously over-gassed (a necessity for a large variety of reasons). So that might have something to do with it. There's not any other signs of high pressure are there? Blown out or smashed primers for example?
>>
>>30027394
no, nothing like that

if they're overgassed, wouldn't violent ejection be more likely than completely absent ejection/cycling?
I think the rifle is short stroking or cycling at all

is it possible the gas cutoff got stuck in off somehow?
>>
>>30027422
Somewhere along the way I misread what your problem was. So apologies there.

Yours is probably fouled somewhere in the gas system. You should clean it out. French military ammo was corrosive, and they were used in some pretty dirty places. So yeah, clean your shit out thoroughly.

I think I diagnosed it
the hammer is sitting rather high in the receiver when cocked and causing excessive resistance to the bolt
there is wear on the hammer visible from this
the fix is a $0.11 pack of washers to shim the FCG a bit lower so the hammer sits flush or slightly bellow the receiver floor when cocked

other symptoms were probably in my head

Might be worth your time to set aside $800 for the CMP and get your paperwork in order for when Garands come back.

Also, I've heard rumors that the CMP is going to get a shipment of 1903a3s that they're going to sell like they did the M1 Carbines, first come first serve.

They're coming back, definitely. Right now they're organizing their stock and rebuilding serviceable rifles out of parts guns. They will be out for good pretty soon though- if you want a Garand for CMP prices, don't hesitate; something as good as that can't last forever.
>>
>>30028137
Well they made around 22,000, though more were Syrian contract rifles (they have a spike bayonet in addition to the grenade launcher).

The Syrians ordered 6000 rifles. Around half made it to the states. The reason French 49s are so rare is because so few were imported.

I really owe you guys newer collection pics, but it gets to be a bit of effort dragging everything out, and it just feels "naked" when you have everything except for one glaring fucking hole, which you keep meaning to fill, so its easier to just hold off until its just right.

This pic needs my new Stgw57 and Stgw90, and I need to buy a Swiss P220, a Swiss luger, and some Swiss revolvers.

Is the panic buying starting ALREADY? I thankfully bought a bunch of .223 for my AR at my lgs like 4 weeks before sandy hook, just because they were having an amazing sale.. $150/1000 for PMC brass. I'm now looking at the last 3-4 mags of the stuff and I also finally exhausted the 2000 rounds of x39 a /k/ommando sold me half a year before that, while also buying more guns in those calibers, and I was hoping to bulk buy .223, x39, 9x19, and 30-06 over the next few months, but I REALLY didn't want to battle fudds over $1/rnd .223.

Shit fucking timing.
