Drank with him after hours at the Aberdeen Proving Ground Museum. He's a serious bro.

And he looks like Dr. Bunsen Honeydew from the Muppets.

This was back in 1995 or so....
Dr.Atwater told us a story of how his father was a military attache to the British and he was billited at some Lord's manor in the countryside in the 1950's The Lord liked to shoot rabbits with a bolt action .222 Remington Magnum, a little overkill and rather expensive at the time, but he was rich. Anyway, one day the Lord was teaching him how to drive stick on an old beater, when he asked Bill if he could take the car into the village and pickup his son at the train station, he was coming home on leave. Well, practice makes perfect, so sure, he'd do it.
When he got to the station, there's this pimply kid, a few years older than Bill in a British Coronet's uniform, with his luggage, a wooden transit case, and a couple of ammo boxes. They tossed the mess in the back seat of the convertible, when he asked "What's in the box?" " Oh that? I signed a Bren Gun out of the arms room, to practice with. After we get back, I'll change and we'll go shoot it."
And shoot they did, folding the windscreen down, and taking turns, one driving, the other blasting away all over the Lord's property. It was all fun until they were met at a crossroads by two constables on bicycles, along with their sergeant. They were nicked. When the Lord's son identified himself, the tone changed, but the sergeant asked, "Pardon me , but do you see the property over yonder?" "Why yes, that belongs to Lord so and so." "Good, your eyes are younger than mine, do you see that flag flying from the flagpole on the roof?" He said " Yes, I see it, but I can't make it out."
Well, young Sir, that's the Queen's banner, and she's in residence at that house and doesn't wish to be disturbed by machine gun fire right now, please put that away."

If this had been in modern times, they would have been pounced on by SAS fast roping from a Lynx.

Tankettes.

They never really get lied about their roles and capabilities. People are too scared of being called out on their shit. They carry pistol protection and single fire anti vehicle weapons or some light autocannon/HMG.

Pretty honest little gun carriers.

He had a bunch of other filthy stories from his time in Vietnam, but I was kind of drunk. I did get to tour the arms room you always see him in, as well as the library. I was shown an empty space on the shelf where all the files and papers on The Paris Gun from the First World War were supposed to be. He said Gerald Bull checked them out, and they're probably not going to get them back.

I just love those old tanks look with those round/egg-shape turrets.

I like them the same way I like cars: sure brand new cars are super fast and efficient and pack sophisticated technology, but I love the way a 53 Buick or 67 GTO looks.

T-72B. Not so complex as t-64, not so expensive as t-80. Good, solid tank.

I thought it's first engagements were D-Day. The 8th Army in Italy was already Sherman-heavy so re-equipping them with Cromwells would have added extra logistical strain.
