Hey /k/
Untill recently I never gave much thought about the way I cleaned my AR. I use a one piece coated rod, bronze brush and hoppes 9/ Ballistol and clean breech to muzzle.
However,I have been reading things on the internet that are making me kinda paranoid. You use a coated rod? It's gonna pick up grit and scratch your barrel. You use a Steel rod? It's gonna scratch your barrel because it's steel on steel. You don't have a bore guide(didn't even know those existed)? You are wrecking havoc on that poor barrel.
I find it kinda hard to believe that slowly moving a rod through a chrome-lined barrel could do more damage than a tightly fit bullet travelling through it with hot gasses behind...
What do you guys think about it? Is it really that easy to scratch/damage your rifle barrel?

>Is it really that easy to scratch/damage your rifle barrel?
Yes
>>
>there are actually people who don't change barrels after every range trip
i-i thought it was a meme

Care to elaborate?
>>
>>29978656
This.

By the way your bronze brush is also scratching the bore.
>>
>>29978625
Nah that's a bunch of malarchy.

But I clean mine the way I did I'm Marines. Scrub it down with clp and wipe it with a cloth. Don't even bother with the metal shit. Just use the cloth pads with your barrel cleaner and it's attachment. Swipe as many times till it's practically coming out 100% clean. do it once more with cloth slightly oiled with clp.

Clean all innards including the bolt of rifle with q tips till they are coming out clean. Lightly oil the innards. Slap her back together and put it away.

How in the world is a gently pushed bronze brush scratching a barrel when a bullet being rammed through it isn't?!
>>
>>29978717
it doesn't. dumbfucks like

>>29978686
are just trolling

gun cleaning kits always include a bronze brush for your barrel, in fact sometimes shit won't even come off your barrel without a good scrub
>>
>>29978625
You could clean it with knotted up shoelaces and motor oil.

It doesn't fucking matter as long as the rifle continues to function.
>>
>>29978625
First of all the walmart brush and hoppes kit are the worst way to do it. Take it from someone who autistically cleans his guns in the best way possible.

First of all, guns are not very mechanically demanding... Well maybe the AR platform is, you may want to add some other form of lubricant to dump into it.

For cleaning, a CLP works great as a good cheap option. Doesn't harm the finish like hoppes.

For lubricating, hornady one shot on parts that move very little, like the trigger group and springs. This is just for minor rust and wear protection. If you live somewhere with serious rust concerns then use WD40 "specialist rust prevention". NOT fucking WD40. Of course you can use WD or motor oil even in a hunch but that shouldn't be your first choice.

For high friction areas, wheel bearing grease. Same shit as frog lube but can be bought in bulk cheaper.

>>29978970
Oh and for the barrel get a bore snake or use shoelaces.
>>
>>29978978
OP here, boresnakes is what I generally use. I bring out the aforementioned cleaning procedure only once in a while to really do a deep cleaning.
Like you, I tend to be autistic too when dealing with my guns, that's why reading online that basically everything you put inside your barrel will damage it got me so worried...

>cleaning your guns
ok chris kyle i'm sure that 1/100th of an moa is why you can't hit paper at 8'

yeah when some people said that bronze brushes damage barrels I kinda lost hope...

I know that Hoppes shouldn't be used on nickel plated guns but I don't think that it can harm normal finish/blued guns

>Is it really that easy to scratch/damage your rifle barrel?

no. the only thing to worry about is damage to the crown of the muzzle, which is basically impossible if you clean back to front.

also get yourself some copper solvent and use that twice a year or so. it works wonders.
>>
There is a diminishing return curve of freaking out about cleaning. Your shit tier AR probably won't show any ill effect, but a nice bench rest rifle can have the throat damaged without using a bore guide the same way lapping can cause wear in parts just from rubbing a little grit together. Bore snakes don't remove copper either so eventually you will have to do a through cleaning once accuracy inevitably degrades...
>>
Easiest way to not suck at life is to use foaming bore cleaner. You can get the barrel soaked without anything hard rubbing against it. Then, bore snake the bore cleaner out. Ideally, you leave the first application of bore cleaner in while you clean the action to really soak in. Repeat. Then bore clean it over night. Afterward, wipe it down with a brass brush with dry patches. Repeat until clean. If you clean consistently, this takes less than 5 or so patches, I don't go until its absolutely spotless though. If you want to, though, which I do when cleaning a milsurp I just bought, repeat the foaming cleaner and patch process until satisfied, but its not necessary to be white glove clean, a little buildup in the micro pits of the bore actually it's supposed to help accuracy, but I'm not pro to notice a difference. When complete, soak a patch with hoppes oil and run it through. You've minimized the time, work, number of times passing something that could damage your bore, and carbon/brass buildup using this method.

Though desu senpai, for an ar where you can replace the upper for under 500, it's not worth worrying about, especially since your roundcount would have to be really high and you'd have to be a very good shooter at long range to notice the difference. I mean like camp Perry reload your own ammo for max accuracy good. I only think of this stuff for rare gats like my zfk55 or g43 which you will never ever find a replacement barrel in the us, and it would ruin the collectors value to.

Oh, and if you're not shooting corrosive, hold off on cleaning the bore until you hit like 500 or 1000 rounds or whatever depending on how dirty it is. You really don't need a cleaning every 50 or 100 rounds for the bore. Cleaning and greasing the action, especially for an AR, is absolutely necessary though.

What brand foaming bore cleaner do you use?
