'sup /k/,

I work in R&D for a firearms manufacturer and we're having a brainstorming today about possible future products we could make in the field of electronics surrounding infantry weapons (pistols, assault rifles and machine guns). It can be inside the weapon, accessories or even armoury stuff.

So /k/, if you have any idea for some cool stuff you'd like to see on the market in a few years, now is the time to speak up.

>>29973906
Not necessarily.
If they hear a similar suggestion from multiple sources, and you can be sure this guy is gonna post on multiple forums, they'll get a pretty good inclination that there's a possible market demand for that functionality.

>>29973899
Last round impact tracking?
>>
Instead of tritium sights, build a rifle with a much larger tritium battery that powers led's.

Use whatever power is left to fire from a solenoid.
>>
Put a chip in it.

And a big fucking useless touchscreen.
>>
>>29973899
Ammo counter like in the movie Aliens.
>>
>29973909
Already working on it but not on the way you dream of. Baby steps first.

>>29973935
We have a marketing department for that too, but not only do they suck, they are more about very down to earth, mass demand stuff. I'm looking for ideas about more long-term/far-fetched products we can make proof of concepts for on our own internal budget. Plus while we work in the field, none of us in R&D are shooters at all so we don't know what people might dream of.

So, like a rail mounted accessory that tracks the trajectory of the last round? I can see how to do that for 40mm grenades, not for bullets, I'll see if someone has an idea how.

>>29973976
Hmm, not sure about putting this kind of battery next to electronics. I'll keep the idea and look into it though, thanks. Why would you want to change the firing mechanism though? Seems more trouble that it's worth.

>>29974033
Not sure there is a serious demand for stuff like that... Is there?
>>
>>29974226
Tons of tactifags would buy magazines with ammo remaining displays, or a system that feeds information to a little screen on a rail or on the optic or such.
>>
>electronics surrounding infantry weapons

Robust, yet low profile Laser Rangefinders that mount to rails would be great for all infantry weapons.

This is something that all infantry firearms need and is an idea that your company would actually bank off of. Ours just won the contract for the Marine's new laser range finder binos, it's profitable. All the R&D is simple electrical engineering that any office team can handle.

We just developed one last year suitable for assault rifles. Too big for pistols, but I don't there'd be much use. Prototype is done but is having trouble reaching the market due to internal conflicts. Coming soon though.

Could you have guns communicate with each other for their relative orientation so you can draw a map of where your soldiers are aiming and better identify gaps in your firing line?
>>
>>29974226
Tritium battery guy here

Betavoltaics are already a thing. But using the power from one to fire a gun, and it doesn't matter how, either through a solenoid, a laser, or a spark (if you remove the primer) would all be cool proofs of concept.

This guy has the right idea, networking things is where it's at. See those cool as fuck networked AGMs the Brits have.

>>
>>29974519
>>29974553

Another option is to develop an individual attachment which relays that this rifle just fired, to immediately keep commanders updated on real-time Troops In Contact on their portable electronic maps. The electronic map system has already been developed and fielded by Elbit Systems so I'm not sure if it's possible to piggyback on their technology like that.

We already have a complete proof of concept. Google "FN TASAM", it's public.

>>29974529
We already have firing from solenoids on vehicles and pods for helicopters, and electric primers on prototypes, so it'd be nothing new. Betavoltaic batteries is an idea worth investigating though, it seems to fit our low-power/long shelf time needs, and I don't think anybody here has looked into it yet.

A round counter. Not like whats been suggested already about telling you what you have in the mag.
I mean a counter that keeps track of total shots fired through the barrel. This would be great for military and police armories to keep track of their stock of guns. Easily keep track of how often certain parts need to be replaced or maintained.

Make a camera at the end that works as an optic so you can hip fire or shoulder fire without having an actual optic. Also include range finder and zoom if you really want. Make it record footage and pluginto usb drives. Loterally own the market with such a device. Not smart gun, camera optic.

For personal weapons probably biometrics in the trigger or grip.

Would prevent kids shooting themselves. Would prevent kids also shooting others. Would prevent roody-poos from breaking into your home or snatching your purse to than use your own weapon to kill you.

Would possibly allow the storage regulations for weapons to be relaxed. No need to keep them locked in a safe if it's biometric. Just leave it in a drawer or on a table.

The potential downside is that the government would log all the fingerprint data no doubt. But it could help solve a lot of crimes as well.

Police could just check who fired the gun that committed a murder. But of course that data is fudge-able. Could lead to a lot of false imprisonment.

Hot rail, central battery (probably in the pistol grip or buttstock)
