I just bought a CMP Special M1 Garand at a gun show for $850. It's a Springfield manufacture with a serial just over 3 million (Sumer 1944).

I loved the M1 since I was a child, and now one is finally mine after all the years of longing. I feel like a million bucks right now.

Nice pham. I got a service grade with a 0 muzzle and 1 throat rating a few months back, and it came with the same new stock. You should put a couple coats of boiled linseed oil on it.
>>
>>29946064
One of the most fun guns to shoot in the world. Congrats op, now start stocking up on hxp and en-bloc's.
>>
>>29946114
Bought a spam can on US surplus M2 ball to shoot with.

I heard the op rod can be damaged firing heavier 30-06 loads. What's a good off the shelf brand to shoot other than surplus?
>>
>>29946064
congrats OP. Got mine under similar circumstances about a month ago. What a glorious feeling it is.
>>
>>29946064
jelly as fuck
>>
>>29946168
American Eagle M1 Garand seems to work ok in mine, although admittedly I havent put a whole lot of it through my rifle.
>>
>>29946168
oh yeah, and here's some links with more info on the subject of commercial loads through M1s.

>>
>>29946248
Thanks for the info, man. The M1's pretty different beast compared to modern guns so I'm a bit out of my element.

Seems a bit complicated but that also seems like 1/2 the fun of owning one. I'm hoping to take it to the range soon.

Also, any info on what the M1 barrel proofs mean?
>>
>>29946317
The "P" is just an inspection proof mark. The "SA" is Springfield Armory. Looks like yours has a 55 barrel on it (don't let this bother you, Springfield factory refurbished and re-barreled a lot of Garands during the early 50s. Almost all of the ones in good shooting condition will have had this done.) Not quite sure what the rest are.

Easily the best rifle ever made.
>>
>>29946086
aren't they prohib because muh 5 round centrefire capacity and u can only own one if you a) nicked it from a corpse in ww2 or b) inherited it or c) have a collectors (prohib) permit?
>>
>>29946064
Congrats on your garand OP, i happened to buy one too recently however it has seen better days and was dirty as fuck. The bore was shiny though when i had the gunsmith check it out, turns out the op rod needs to be replaced. Now im between buying the op rod or selling it the fuck off after filling my cousin with hope about taking him to shoot the thing.
>>
>>29946824

garand has a named exception.

although good luck finding one for under $1800.

plenty of cheap actions though.
>>
>>29946824
Was omitted by name. Lucky us I guess.
>>
>>29946942
What are the laws for bringing guns into Canada?

I'm visiting a friend this summer and I could bring a few guns over for us to shoot.
>>
Columbus machine works refurbishes your oprod. About 150, but you get a guaranteed to spec oprod. Best deal out there.
>>
>>29946970

short answer: don't.

unless you have an assload of paperwork, hunting licences and permits if you don't have a PAL (non residents can apply), and nothing prohibited by name or classification, its not worth the hassle and risk.
>>
Damn, I never even scared about this rifle since playing day of defeat as a kid, and that's only because it was the best rifle in game, but this thread makes me want one.
>>
>>29946317
>>29946527
SA is Springfield Armory
the F6535448 is a part number the 1/55 is the date created the A217B is a heatlot the P is a proof the M is magnaflux and the 3 star eagle is another proof

Great price on a special btw. Thats like 200 under price.
Is that rust on the barrel though?
Specials are reparked and pieced together so it wont have collector value but great for shooting
>>
>>29946086
Wat.
In Canada you can buy garands for like 400$
You are not looking hard at all if you cant find them in Canada

>>29946168
A garand will handle USGI M1/M2 ball fine. Its non military ammunition that can be an issue.
That and uncut op rods can break with any ammunition which is why they modified them to cut op rods.
If you want an off the shelf brand thats safe many companies make a 30-06 'Springfield M1 safe' line of ammo PPU is a good brand that does this

If you really need ammo though nothing beats the price of HXP M2 Ball from the CMP at 115$ for 198rounds on enblocs in bandoleers
>>
>>29947109
Yeah, I believe it is. Will be giving it a thorough cleaning as soon as I can.
>>
>>29947076
It should make you want one. They're wonderful. When I got mine, one of the first things I did after cleaning it was boot up DOD and slay bots on avalanche, just for nostalgia's sake
>>
>>29946064

Good on you breh.

I know a guy who may be selling one. I don't get into contact with him much, but he often attends a range day I go to. He let me shoot it the first year I was there and fuck did I fall hard for it.
>>
>>29946993
What if I were to go fishing on lake superior with my beautiful garand, meet a friendly canadian on the lake, then lose my garand unfortunately, but luckily find $1000 floating along in the lake?
>>
>>29947359
Could be possible. Don't need to register non-restricted.
>>
>>29947359
Arent M1s like 3K in Canada?
>>
>>29947359
>>29947394
no. M1's are like 400$ in canada
It would be better to be coming back from your boat trip with more garands
>>
>>29947394
I'm not Jewish, unfortunately, so my barter skills are too low for that.

>>29947401
I thought SVT's were cheap but M1 Garands were expensive. Did Canada all of a sudden come into a shitload of Garands?
>>
>>29947412
No Canada just never had the import restrictions.
I know a guy in Canada that has like 6 consecutive breda garands that he acquired for like 200 each a few years ago.
Most people who think they are expensive in Canada have never used the Canada boards.
>>
>>29946064
Just a heads up unless this is a Service Grade Special its not a CMP Special M1 Garand. The Specials have a new production criterion barrel where this one has a 1/55 barrel
>>
>>29947423

those would be stripped actions. minimum for a full rifle, even a breda, is like 1600-1800.

we have never gotten garands en masse in our lifetime like we get slavshit.
>>
>>29948412
Still cheaper for stripped actions than the US
>>
>>29948525

those we are fucking swimming in, you get can a set of 4 consecutive matching 2 or 3 digit serial breda receivers for like $600.

finishing them is a whole other animal though.
>>
>>29948706
I want to come to canada and smuggle them back to the US. Breda man ... if you could get those in the US you could sell them for 400 each and since they are serial i bet you could put another 100 easy on top on that
>>
>>29947401
>$309 usd for a Garand
>>
>>29946064
Whats the process of buying it like? Considering buying one myself
>>
>>29946064
Lucky bastard. I remember back in ROTC we had a pair for color gaurd. Welded shut and damaged as fuck. I died a little every time I handled it. Always wanted to have one. That good 30-06 and beautiful wood furniture.
>>
>>29948998
If you could buy M1 recievers for 309$ son you best get on it.

>>29949037
CMP is sold out on all of their offerings except the snipers and the
CMP Special in .308 which is a reparked Garand with a new production barrel in .308
>>
>>29946064
thats in really good condition.
>>
>>29946064
Great, OP. I'm happy for you
>>
>>29949098
new production wood makes any rifle look pretty nice if there is no pitting on the external metal
>>
>>29947143
>198 rounds
Second on that, also it's by weight, of the 12 cans I've bought from the cmp and none had fewer than 202 rounds.
>>
>>29949155
dont be so salty. if youre jealous, just say so.
>>
>>29946785

One of the worst designs ever

>unreliable

>can't fire standard 30-06

>must use reduced power m2 ball or rifle will be damaged

>made by a canadian

> 30-06 sucks
>>
New production wood, YUCK.
>>
>>29949157
Sorry its 192 per can and the Sealed HXP on Enblocs in Bandos is not by weight. Its a better deal than the 200 rounds loose

>>29949160
I am not salty, I have two garands.
See >>29948234
I am not the biggest fan of Boyd's gunstocks (which is the original source of the stocks).

If you want some XXX wood see Dupages stock like https://shop.dupagetrading.com/product_info.php/tiger-strip-maple-stock-set-p-612

Thanks for the warning; nice catch.

Your post made me do some more reading, and you are correct: this is a CMP Service Grade Special instead.

It made me feel even better, since now I know the metal on the rifle aren't repros, but extremely well-aged USGI parts. I just need to get that rust spot treated and this will be a keeper.

My buddy got a Garand with the CMP stock. Admittedly, its not bad at all in person. Sure, its not the hearty walnut that has toured war torn Europe, but its nice for what it is.

Well done. I just picked up mine. Like you I have always wanted one. Mine is a Springfield Sept of 1942 production with a 6 digit serial number. Shoots great.
>>
is the gas tube you need to shoot regular powered 30-06 adjustable, or do you just put it in and not worry about it? Wondering if I have to make adjustments every time I switch from surplus to hunting rounds or how it works.
>>
>>29949648
Do you actually have any papers for it?
SGS's were collector grade metal with new production wood.
Basically people just had to swap the stocks to make them correct.
Be aware though people have been faking CMP certs for awhile and the only way to know for sure is to send the CMP 25$ for them to research the SN for you. They will tell you if it came from them and what grade it was when it left. A bunch of people got scammed on correct grades that were really service / field grades when they left CMP. Metal does look nice though from that one pic other than the rust.

>>29953017
If you want to shoot SAAMI 30-06 you will need to get an adjustible plug and yes you will have to adjust it for each brand of ammunition. Shooting SAAMI 30-06 wont hurt if its a round or two but constantly shooting it will damage the op rod ~ 100-150$ part. You could always just remove the gas plug and have a single shot rifle (you will have to cycle the op rod) but there is no chance of damage.

TLDR If you get an adjustible buy a single brand of SAAMI ammunition or you will have to readjust the plug for each brand
