What are the advantages/ disadvantages of direct impingement, piston, and roller/delayed blowback along with other notable gas systems?
Piston will jam way more then gas systems, in my experince

What would be a preferred system for something like a high capacity 9mm with a uniquely wide grip, as if to fit casket style magazines within the grip.

No idea what to tell you there. There's only so many ways to push a piston backwards and have a spring push it back, and mostly I don't really care about the difference.
If the trigger isn't complete shit and I can put my cheek behind the sights, I've found nearly every rifle I've picked up will let me put a bullet where I want.

We'll I suppose it all boils down to maintenance, reliability, and ease of assembly/disassembly to me, my only experience so far is with ar 15s/ actual m16s so it's pretty limited.
