Theres a reason they are that price, most are in pretty rough shape and are surplus, but current CZs are made on cast frames, so older ones that are made from forgings are a bit more desirable to collectors. (dont take my word for it might be something more deep than that)

Many people consider older = better. I think the lack of a firing pin block doesn't actually affect the trigger pull, but many people believe it does, so they are desirable. For the price, it's about the best "wonder 9" you can get.

Once I replaced the recoil spring, yes. The way it came was so ratty, though, and when Sigs' recoil springs get worn out, the guns jam.

Thats the nice thing about sigs though, thats pretty much the only part you have to worry about replacing for a very long time compared to other steelframe wonder nines
May have been ratty but to get a working sig for 400 bucks and the price of a recoil spring, I'd say you made out alright.

The earlier ones had forged frames which made them higher quality (and more expensive to produce). They also had shorter rails and a couple other differences. This original one was touted as the best 9mm in the world when it was made.
When demand shot up they moved to cast their frames and outsourced production to Spain for a short while which resulted in a huge loss of quality and made a huge distinction between the earlier guns and the later ones.

Check this seller's inventory periodically over the next week or so. They make their living by importing Hi Powers and other surplus guns, and all their auctions are 3-day auctions, so there's quite a lot of turn-over. They don't have any Hi Powers in stock right now, but half a dozen nice ones just ended a little earlier. Over the past 2-3 weeks, they've had ample stock of fairly nice-looking Hi Powers that will sell for anywhere from $400 (trashy-looking) to $700 (near-perfect), depending on the condition. Another quick way to find their auctions is to search "surplus hi power."
