You can kill yourself pretty easily with 9mm before the bear gets to you, so you dont have to suffer the mauling.

It can be used. It *could* kill a bear. More successfully than .45 in my opionion.
Don't use hollow points. Use the heaviest fastest FMJ you can find. Preferably 147gr flat nose +p+ or +p
If not 9mm to the head would be less painful them getting mauled to death
