Ok so I belong to a range that allows for reactive targets. I want to build a collapsible target stand for an 8" AR500 steel gong to be hanged from. Ideas for something whose parts can be put in the trunk of a car? Goal is to have it hang two or so feet above the ground.

Six pieces of 2x4 24" long each. Make a box frame with four. Put eye bolts into it to hang your plate from.

Add the other two on either side using carriage bolts to allow them to swing out. Use a small length of light chain to keep the legs from going to far out. Shouldn't cost more than 15 bucks.

If you want higher just make the two sides of the box and legs longer.

I use these from my local hardware (ausfag so Bunnings)
they're $20 for 2 and they fold up to the side of a 2x4

Only thing is it needs a couple of wires to stabilize it with rounds above .308

This is very true. And misses and what not reduce its life span. But that one lasted until my friend started shooting 7.62x54R steel core at my mild steel plate.

Its main draw is its cheap and easy for anyone to do with a saw and drill and can be made whatever size you want. Hell home depot will even cut them to length for you if you want.

my concern is theyre not stable enough. i dont want to have to pick up the stand every few shots.

Don't complicate things OP. Just spend 10 bucks at Loews.

I connect a long piece of rope to either end, and then bring it far behind the plate and put a tent peg in the middle of it, my range slopes slightly opwards and that is enough to shoot it with a 300wm without it falling

These work just as well.

Take this idea, but over lay the 2x4 legs and take a hole saw to the middle and insert metal conduit (ID say 1.5 inch EMT) and drill some holes for coter pins, that way you and remove pins and have it all break down
>>
>>29894855
Should have been more clear with this. Use the conduit for the horizontal top bar so the spalling wont effect that area too much. Possibly you could make this whole set up with conduit, bolts, and pins to make it easier to carry with much longer life than 2x4

OP here. Went ahead with this idea. Makes the most sense by far to me. Greatly appreciate all input.
