Looking for a decent hachet. I'm not well versed in blade quality so I figured I'd ask here. Just something for general innawoods work. Doesn't have to look any certain way. Just no mallninja pls.

>>29882853
>>29882880
I have a Gransfors bruk, and it's really cool. If you want to save a bit of money, there's Wetterlings. I sharpened up my Dad's old Wetterlings, and it's still going strong.. If you want to save more, Condor makes a decent hatchet.
I've heard a lot of people say they like their Estwing hatchets, but I don't have any experience with them.
>>29882892
I did see estwing while doing some googling. Is the gerber shit any good? I've owned a few knives by them. They don't seem to be complete garbage but I don't know about their other stuff.
>>29882880
They're too fucking expensive. Try a Husqvarna, OP.
http://www.amazon.com/Husqvarna-576926401-13-Curved-Hatchet/dp/B004VLKLJE/ref=sr_1_3?srs=2593774011&ie=UTF8&qid=1462747904&sr=8-3&keywords=husqvarna+axe
That's if you're dead set on a hatchet. I seriously encourage you to consider something a bit more useful, like a little forestry/boy's axe, or one of the various makes of Hudson bay axes:
http://www.amazon.com/Council-Hudson-Bay-Protective-Sheath/dp/B00QMK04K8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1462748026&sr=8-4&keywords=council+tool
Stay the hell away from anything made in China. Chink steel is chintzy. The Central American stuff is... tolerable. American made or Swedish/German is still the best.
>>29882853
Bumping with totally unrelated shit because I too am looking for a decent hatchet
>>29882912
I have a USA made Gerber Prodigy knife I keep in my car's emergency kit. It's decent, but nothing special.
I don't know enough about their hatchets, but I'm not sure I'd trust their Bear Grylls line. The parang machete got recalled because it would easily break at the handle.
>>29882929
Not familiar. What's the difference between a "hatchet" and "forestry" or "boy's axe"?
>>29882853
>no mallninja
Just go to your local hardware store and buy an Estwing hatchet, then. Affordable, one piece steel that'll outlive you.
>>29882853
You don't want a hatchet. Get a tomahawk. Like the CRKT choggen (or what the fuck ever its model name is)
>>29882967
Yeah na the Bear Grills shit is cringy to me. It was just the first pic on Google
>>29882853
I use a Fiskars X7 when innawoods. It's not all super cool and expensive and wooden nor is it mallninja as fuck. It does work well tho for basic tasks, firewood prep, etc.
>>29882969
Hatchets are short little things. They're basically a hammer with an edge on it. A forestry (also called a boy's axe) is a light compact felling axe -- the axe equivalent of a pistol-caliber carbine, I guess. That longer handle makes all the difference in the world when you're trying to clear brush or chop anything.
http://www.amazon.com/22br-21-4lb-Boys-Axe/dp/B000IJVDL8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462748026&sr=8-1&keywords=council+tool
My little blue Collins forestry axe has lasted me since I was a teenager cutting firewood for allowance money. I still carry it in my truck for odd jobs.
Also, if you're gonna get into axes, know how to take care of one. Keep it oiled and sharp. Sand the handle. Hit it with some linseed or tung oil. Like that.
>>29882985
>CRKT choggen (or what the fuck ever its model name is)
Normally Tomahawks are shit for anything but fighting, but this actually looks pretty fucking handy. Has enough mass to chop decently, and that hammer poll would be useful. Thanks for the recommendation, brah

Try finding some austenitic stainless steel, something like allied steel (iron, carbon, nickel).
pretty hard, don't rust, and more importantly it doesnt get brittle when its really cold like other martensitic steel
>>29883024
Hm. Interesting. I still can't take one-handed chopping things that seriously unless they're machetes, but the sharp portion on the inside could serve as a kinda-sorta pruning hook.
I'd still rather save almost half the money and get another little forestry axe, though. But if you want it and don't mind the money, hell, why not?
>>29882853
Estwing, made in the USA. This is what I use.

>>29882853
Maybe I'm just a huge faggot but I just use a Fiskars hatchet I bought from Wal-Mart. It handle has a nice little "chin" so your hand doesn't slide off, it comes in this nice sort of "sleeve" thing that the hatchet goes into, sort of like a sheathe but made of plastic. The backside is exposed steel for all your hammering needs. The blade has some chips in it, but it sharpens pretty easy, and the chips are because I processed wood on ground that was pretty rocky. Its also small enough to fit nicely in a standard US assault pack. So thats nice. Only 20 bucks also, a great buy in my opinion.
>>29882892
Don't go with the Condor, they dropped their QC ever since Wranglercuck praised it.
>>29882912
Gerber is pretty bad now, would stay away from it. The Estwing is "meh"
>>29882853
Honestly, I'd recommend that you get a small forest axe, (20" handle).
I'm personally going to pick up a Wetterlings and hand sharpen it. I'd recommend taking a look at the Wetterlings Outdoor axe. I personally prefer the Wetterlings head geometry over the Gransfors Bruks geometry. The Wetterlings is a much better splitter because of its wedge like head.
That said, the Wetterlings is also a lot more cheaper and readily available. Les Stroud seems to like the Wetterlings axes as well. The CEO is also a total qt3.14.
If you're looking for a cutting axe though, the Gransfors Bruks small forest axe will be much better suited for you. I just prefer a wedge geometry on my axes.
If you don't feel like dropping 100+ on an axe, the Hultafors axes are very very good axes for the money. The sheath is also very nice. Dave Canterbury seems to like them.

>>29883141

>Hultafors
I just ordered their splitting maul from an outfit in Finland, and it ought to be here within the week. Husqvarna sells their factory seconds, but I wanted a real one. After using dad's old 8-pound Collins for decades, I am ready to upgrade.

>>29882880

>>29882912
I had a gerber gator once, made in the USA, kept in my tackle box and cleaned many hundreds of trout, crappy, and bass with it. Perfect for having wet hands, as the handle was some slightly rubbery stuff.
>>29883253
Actually Hultafors is the parent company. The axes are actually made by Hults Bruk, and they also sell them under their own name, but sell the factory seconds to Husqvarna, and they sell a line of axes in the US now, but not the splitting maul for some reason. Which is all confusing as fuck and also the reason I had to order from Finland.
But yeah. The foundation for the old medieval forge is still there on the factory grounds, and they still make 'em the same way -- just substituting modern machinery for a small army of apprentices.

Boker Plus Tomahook.

Because it's shitty steel that will not hold an edge and make you work harder and ultimately have you throwing it away. That's why. You'd be better off buying any random old Murrican made hatchet at a yard sale. It might be chipped and fucked up and the head might have the corners dangerously rounded off, but at least the bastard will still hold an edge.

>>29888118
Gerber has some of the best finishes and THE best handles of any products I've ever dealt with. I prefer small Gerber knives to CRKT, they seem to just be overengineered with unnecessary stuff. For example the autolawks thing, how fucking annoying why would I want to use both hands to close my knife? I also have 2 knives from each brand that are almost copies (Gerber evo & CRKT m16) the evo is lighter despite the m16 having a plastic handle, and the m16 has sharp corners that actually cut me if I stick my hand in the pocket it's clipped to.
Definitely prefer Gerber to them, but Gerber is indeed the "tacticool" brand. Gear designed for tactical use probably isn't the best suited for hard woods use. Their knives are solid but something like a hatchet, maybe get something hardware store grade.

>>29893862
You will never have to replace it but I kind of get your point.
>>29893862
the ability to replace the handle is a wranglestar meme. that meme was born from axe restorers, not the consumer market, and is irrelevant to the qualities of the axe. if you wish to say that wood is a more appropriate conducter of energy when chopping, thats fine. but to say that having a wooden handle is to have the ability to replace it is just something you watched online
i get that lucky items feel better, and i advocate revolvers for that reason. but dont try that 'its not a flaw, its a feature' bullshit you see said by consumers that only know about the product what they see their idols say
i would never use a fiskars, but at least i know why
>>29893947
No, it's based on re-hafting my old forestry axe and watching Dad do the same for his sledge once, and being reliant on wood heat as recently as last week. I don't want a whole battery of axes in case one needs to be sent back to the factory. I feel the visceral need to be able to do it myself, especially with so simple and so vital a tool.
I've decided I want something full tang but don't like the estwings. Are there any full tang axes similar to it? Is this Schrade any good?
>>29893997

full tang hatchets/axes will give you a wretched case of tennis elbow if you try to cut down anything substantial. Wood and synthetic handles absorb shock much better.

Why.

Because they don't break? I don't think you can swing a full tang Steel ax hard enough to break it. The plastic ones where the top wraps around the blade (like the fiskars) are not replaceable unless you can widdle something up that works. They do that because it makes it a better hammer (the blade design with a hole in the middle can weaken if you use it as a hammer often enough)
