Why'd they stop putting cigarettes in MRE's?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVOIgPrDH7E
>>
To lower the per unit cost.
>>
Because it degrades cardiovascular readiness.
>>
Because smoking is more dangerous than anything you are exposed to in the battlefield.

No smoking within 100 yards of the abrams
>>
>>29877245
costs a lot: 10 bucks a pack for 20 cigs adds up
>>
>>29877272
Would the military not be exempt from sin tax?
>>
related question for milfags.
how does eating work innamilitary?
are you guaranteed to be given at least one mre per day?
two?
three?
is it just luck?
do you have times where they tell you to stop the convoy or whatever and eat?
food is very important to the military and nobody ever talks about it.
>>
>>29877278
yeah they would, but still it would be a waste of money for a non essential item.
>>
>>29877245
>Why'd they stop putting cigarettes in MRE's?

OBAMA happened.
>>
>>29877245

Fags don't belong in the military.
>>
>>29877291
holy kek
>>
>>29877291

Hah. Nice.
>>
>>29877272
>10 bucks a pack

I am sure the military was procuring their cigarettes through retail channels in Washington State.
>>
>>29877284
>is it just luck?

You just get lucky sometimes. You'll find an MRE in the back of a truck and split it with the squad. Or horde it for your own and eat your first full meal in literally weeks.

But then sometimes you get lucky and a General will come by and give your unit a speech, then give you pallets of MREs. Most guys will eat just some of each MRE and try to ration out the rest of it for the remainder of their contract, to make sure they actually have food to eat.
That's mostly why you see guys actually hanging around and listening to Generals giving speeches in movies. I hope that answers your question.
>>
>>29877286
Does the military not already waste money on dumb shit?
>>
>>29877302
kek, nice
>>
>>29877306
yeah they do but this actively degrades the soldier's health. Feel free to reply, but im going to bed.
>>
>>29877284
In the field/deployed you either have the chow hall open 3/day when you are on base, or if you are out on patrol/mission you are provided with 2 MREs per day. Whether you choose to pack that much food or not is entirely up to you. There is no set "meal time" during a mission and you are expected to fit in food during movement as you need it.

As an aside, if you are on an MRE only diet for more than three weeks you have to basically go on a health plan to ensure your colon isn't totally fucked, because your shit is going to come out like a giant clay brick.
>>
>>29877309
they dont have to smoke them, it's an option.
but most dudes will.
if they don't, they'll trade it for porn or something.
tobacco, caffeine, and porn are fucking currency in the military.
>>
>>29877319
hey, thanks man. just the answer I was looking for.
and I assume they give you water with the MREs for the heaters/to not die of dehydration?
>>
Local cigs us cheap and we regularly buy them. Believe it or not, I actually enjoyed those morven gold during my time in afghanistan

>>29877284
We have chow time in the base, and there,s also fast food joints inside.

During patrol duty we rely on snackbars and cookies. We inly have decent meal when we make a camp
>>
>>29877325
Water is the most important commodity on the battlefield for an extended mission. If you have vehicles then there is no problem. You have enough room to keep the squad hydrated for weeks. If you are on foot then you will have to carry at least one camel back bladder per day to stay hydrated, at the absolute minimum. That is a lot of weight, so dismounted missions are either short or have planned resupplies from a mobile/airborne source.
>>
>>29877325
Water in the field:
Training = A mobile water tank pulled by one of the training vehicles accompanies your unit to each range, so there is always water available. You fill up as needed.
Combat = Water bottles. Pallets and pallets of water bottles. usually kept in a central location in your base, you grab what you need as you need it and either drink straight from them, or refill your hydration bladder with them.
>>
>>29877245
Why would you start, knowing what we know today about smoking?
>>
>>29877340
Pines or bust.
>>
>>29877350
Smoking a handful of cigarettes every decade or even every year isn't going to kill you.

Smoking a handful of cigarettes every week will.
>>
>>29877284
Other anons have said, but in general you are allowed 3 a day. Which is generally more calories/food than you ever need.

So you rat fuck 3 MRE's for the good stuff and throw away the rest or just toss it at the Marine fatty in the platoon.
>>
>>29877349
>>29877343
>>29877340
great, thanks guys.
so what's the "best" MRE?
I know veggie is the worst and burrito is kinda the middle but what is the total, absolute best?
>>
>>29877367
You're going to die anyway so what's the fuss
>>
>>29877373
+1 internet for Chili Mac
-1 internet for all other main meals
>>
>>29877373
I liked ravioli a lot. But we also kept getting our heaters taken away because people kept making MRE bombs so maybe ravioli was just the best one while cold
>>
>>29877404

this sounds fucking glorious.

>>
>>29877415
kek, looked up a video on it
>fucking tobasco cs gas
>>
>>29877373
The veggie meals actually taste the best, IMO. Other winners include chili mac, spaghetti and meat sauce, sloppy joe, and chicken fajita.
>>
so do MREs come with charms?
how the fuck do you guys get them?
why are they still included, nobody eats them.
replace them with a fucking snickers or some shit
>>
>>29877429
Holy fuck I forgot about the tabasco. Yeah that actually could've been real bad
>>29877434
These are words I have never seen in that order before. Veggie was unanimously hated by everyone i knew
>>
>>29877440
The candy?
yeah you have to eat it all for good luck.
>>
>>29877429
We used to make tobacco cs gas for all sorts of fun in the field.

Trap a Marine in the porta shitter and make a quick tobacco cs gas assembly line of Marines, tossing them all in as soon as they start to produce.

Or dumping a shit ton of tobacco into an empty Gatorade bottle, dropping in the heater, screwing the cap on and tossing it into a quonset hut. When it either explodes of melts through the bottle, the gas spreads and pisses off the Marines inside.

Sky is the limit when it comes to tobacco and mre heaters.

>>29877448
When were you in the service? Things may have changed since then. The veggie omelette is a thing of the past (though unfortunately so is the veggie burger). The veggie meals now are pretty much all pasta. There is veggie lasagna, cheese ravioli, spicy penne pasta, and ratatouille. They all taste pretty good and don't stop you up lik a load of cement up the ass.
>>
>>29877482
What else is new in the MRE scene since the banning of the veggie omelets?
>>
>>29877489
More candy and ranger bars. MREs are a joke. If you eat them for too long it will literally fuck up your kidneys and liver. They are basically fat bombs meant to keep you alive during harsh combat missions, but mainly fed to soldiers state-side during field exercises.

I always wondered what these tasted like.

Though I suppose you'd have to be in a literal fucking warzone to find one.
>>
>>29877523
they taste like regular MREs. I had one during the flooding here awhile back. My neighbor was all "Hey mack, you guys short me? These are supposed to come with cigarettes."
>>
>>29877245
There aren't any cigarettes since 1975.

>Typical commercial brands issued in the cigarette ration were: Camel, Chesterfield, Kent, Kool, Lucky Strike, Marlboro, Pall Mall, Salem, or Winston. Due to health concerns, cigarettes were eliminated from the accessory packs in 1975.
>>
>>29877284
In garrison you get a meal card, which allows you to get 3 "free" meal breakfast, lunch, and dinner at a DFAC (that fucking sucks), or alternatively you could get 300 dollars back instead of having them deducted every month for that "free" meal. But you have to be marry or live off post with proper paper work.

In the field or training you usually get 2 MREs and hot chow for dinner, if you are on a major post in theater you could have 24 hour DFAC, unless you are in more secluded area of operations.
>>
>>29877482
My whole world is upside down. They don't make you shit clay bricks anymore? And I've never heard of half the flavors you listed. We had chili mac, spaghetti, and beef ravioli. Those were the pasta ones. There was this meat patty one that had a fuckload of juice inside the pouch with it. If that juice got on your boot, it was NOT coming off no matter what you did. Permanent stain.

And I got out in 2009
>>
>>29877561
Ya man, things changed right after you got out. They revamped the whole MRE menu, scrapped the ones that people hated, and added a few that were pretty good (Asian beef, chicken fajita, spicy black bean stew). Most of them still make you shit literal bricks, but the vegetarian ones don't quite as much.

As for the boot-staining meat bricks: the beef patty is still alive and well, staining boots and enraging sergeants major all over the military.
>>

Dude survived the sinking of the USS Johnston, he can call natty guard whatever the fuck he wants.
>>
>>29877353
Even afghan soldiers called them shit.

Whenever we go on patrol duty, we usually asked our interpreter to buy a carton(or 2) of Dunhill and trade them with the brits for their ration
>>
>>29877636
Wait can you actually buy things from the local?
>>
>uncle was called into Katrina stuff from Border Patrol
>never understood why
>he always said "I never thought I'd have to eat MRE's and ride in a Blackhawk when I was promoted up to officer level in BP"
>mfw I saw an MRE for the first time
Why would people willfully eat an MRE when ramen cups, nature valley bars, and peanut butter crackers exist?
I was at my LGS the other day that had MRE's and I almost bought one for shits and giggles but fuck, MRE's seem like a life sentence to the port-o-john
>>
>>29877640
We don't loot local populace, mang
>>
>>29877650
simple.
they're a whole day's (or so) of food.
why have like 5 ramen cups in a day when you could have 2 MREs, and get coffee, an entree, dessert, a drink, sides, survival shit, and a shitload of caffeine?
>>
>>29877434
Chicken fajita and beef brisket are awesome.

But cinnamon pop tarts are the best part of any menu.
>>
so since your menu is shit, in terms of food, what should one send in a care package?
I know that tobacco, porn, and caffeine are a must, but what about food?
spaghettios? lunchables?

I miss those little tobacco bottles. Sadly, they aren't a thing anymore. It's a ketchup packet of off brand hot sauce.
>>
>>29877656
All of those things seem like semantics when it comes to eating things that give you calories and fill your stomach. I don't drink coffee. I'd rather have two ramen cups and a can of Copenhagen than whatever is in an MRE. But I'm a civilian and my innawoods trips are usually supplied by noodles, dip, and liquor.
>>
>>29877677
If you send enough sleeve packets of standard Tuna then you will actually be considered a God by the platoon who receives them. If you can't send like, dozens and dozens of them, then go with canned comfort foods like spaghettios.

We got spam once and I was the only one who would eat it. We got giant pieces of salami once and no one wanted it so someone eventually took it. It was used for a food challenge item (make the boot eat the whole thing in ___ minutes sort of deal). We received candy a lot and no one really cared. Now and then we'd receive sleeves of Tuna and I'd here guys whooping and hollering, at the very least, audibly exclaiming "Oh hell yeah" when seeing the tuna.

A lot of white socks are a good idea, too, but since this is an MRE thread I'll not go into further detail for care package items. There are good lists everywhere online. Sacrifice your paycheck for a mobile resupply of Tuna.

Firstly, a pack of cigs isn't ten bucks here. More like 5. Second, government things have tax exemptions I think. Thirdly, they didn't put full packs in MREs.

They had "mini packs" with 4 or 5 cigarettes in them.
>>
>>29877693
I honestly have no idea why anyone would eat an MRE, or a few rather, outside the military. They (at least some) don't taste god awful or anything, but the shit you have to take when you (days later) pass them is hell.

I agree. And it was so thick that it sad in your stomach for a hella long time. I would also stock up on the peanutbutter or cheese. The cheese you put in the hot packet with your main meal and it turns into a nice melty spread. You can also make a cookie with the coffee creamer and the suger, cooked over a lighter
>>
>>29877720
innashtf they would be great.
enough food for 24 hours in one and they last forever while being light-ish and relatively small.

Military doesn't care about health. They care about morale and getting the job done. If they cared about health, then infantry soldiers wouldn't be leaving with fucked joints and deafness.

A smoker wants his smokes. By denying them you're just making many of your own men have to worry about getting them other ways. Also by providing them for free, you make your men happier, and they'll be more likely to have a positive attitude towards superiors.

Why did they stop putting cigs in MRE's? Because smoking is unhealthy.

>dip

You'll want both wintergreen and natural flavors. If your budget allows, Skoal wintergreen fine cut and Copenhagen original fine cut are the 2 types to include. A log of each to begin with, then adjust proportions according to feedback.

If you're a poorfag, send Red Seal natural and wintergreen. Back in my dipping days I shifted from Skoal and Cope to Red Seal when cash got tight. It's an acceptable substitute.

Do not send long cut anything, ever. It's an abomination.

Do not send any other flavors. Those are targeted at the kiddie market. Unless you're supporting child soldiers in Africa, in which case grape and cherry flavors will probably be appreciated.

Do not send any other brand other than the 3 I've mentioned. Things like Grizzly, Coyote, or Rooster will get a price put on your head.

Abrams exhaust may contain unburned jet fuel, depending on how well maintained the engine is. Gaseus jet fuel + lit smokes = bad

I googled WW2 ration cigarettes.

They are older than most all of us.

I love chewing tobacco. Levi Garret is like fucking candy.

>>29880938

Actually eating tobacco is in a lot of military survival books. It's an intestinal parasite cleaner.

Remember, nicotine is used to kill pest animals. It's still poisonous in large quantities like all things.

Disregard other posters. They are probably recruiters or senior enlisted propaganda soldiers. You must supply your own water in the field. We usually have a squad dedicated to digging a well when senior enlisted are not watching for fear of beatings. Sometimes we resort to using urine for mre heaters.

I was a driver for an M1 Abrams in Iraq, and I can tell you that that is 100% pure unbridled bullshit.

Me and my friends would be smoking cigs all the time ontop of the tank and despite butterbars getting upset we never had any reports of tanks exploding
>>
>>29883042
what the fuck.
no, seriously.
turbine engines are retarded good at burning all their fuel.
fuck, you could probably put a blowtorch right next to the exhaust and not even have a problem.
>>29886691
is it true that being the driver is 100% the worst job on the tank?
>>
>>29886720

I didn't think so, as a driver you got to express the inner road demon you never got to at home and you could even recline on the chair or sleep in it if you wanted. Hell, we had an A2 so we even had A/C (kind of)

You were responsible for maintenance, so it did have it terrible's moments

>Why'd they stop putting cigarettes in MRE's?
Because it's against SOP to smoke in the field, specifically at night. It's called light discipline bitch.
>>
>>29877871
think about it this way
>buy rolling papers. $1 per 20-50 at your favorite pakinigger run convenience store or bulk off the internet
>buy "pipe tobacco" in tobacco flavor, because it isn't taxed
>buy pack of filters if you're a faggot
>roll cigarettes with cigarette machine
>price to make a pack: 1.50-2.00
now imagine you're a multinational tobacco corporation. making cigarette would practically be free, which is why cigarettes before big daddy guvment were essentially priced to cost the same to slightly less as making your own.

>>
>>29878577
>>29878682
jesus christ make you own. rolling papers are a dollar for 50 and you can buy "pipe tobacco" for $7 a gallon bag on the internet. I get that the idea is that if coffin nails cost .50c people will stop smoking them, but we all know the real reason is that the government likes the fact that 1/4 of the population gives them $2-8 a day to stave off their physical dependence on nicotine.

but cigarettes are shit tier anyway. pipes and cigars; no noticeable sin tax on them and they don't give you lung cancer or tar buildup and a good sized churchill has more nicotine in it than a whole pack of cigs.

Have you ever been around someone in need of a nicotine fix? Contrary to what one might think, having someone who's irrational and jittery next to you on the battlefield is NOT desirable.

on deployment, which form of tobacco wins;
dip or smokes?
I'd imagine dip cause its cheaper and you don't need a lighter or matches plus nobody can really tell when you're dipping unless you have a big one in, but I dunno.

Instead of bringing back cigs, let's work on getting better coffee into MREs. A packet of freeze-dried Taster's Choice that you have to shake up and drink out of a plastic bag ain't cutting it.
>>
>>29887120
I bet dealing with that would be stressful dealing with "jittery" people, if only they had something in those MREs that alleviated stress. Maybe something that was shelf stable for long periods of time and never expired, but where would we find something like that.
>>
>>29886691
I was attached to a tanker company before, saw the CO smoking a cigar with his gunner smoking a vape, and crewmen joes smoking normal cigs during a rotation in Germany. No fucks given once you gone pass a certain amount of days without showering and shit.

That being said, smoking while cruising in a Bradley for drivers training is incredibly relaxing and fun, more so than it should be.

Tobacco doesn't give you cancer, additives and flavor enhancers in it do.
Same goes for vaping,I expect huge number of vapers to get some form of cancer from the Chinese liquids.
>>
>>29889716
>Tobacco doesn't give you cancer, additives and flavor enhancers in it do.

That's just a flat-out lie right there. Tobacco is by itself carcinogenic, especially when burned but even if you eat the leaves fresh straight from the bush they'll probably give you cancer.

tried to send my son some tobacco products while he was deployed to Afghanistan recently and was told that i couldn't.
USPS Regulations Bullshit.

472.234 Tobacco Product Shipments to APO/FPO/DPO

Shipments of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco may not be sent to APO/FPO/DPO destination addresses to which the mailing of tobacco is restricted (see DMM 703.2.3.1). To the extent cigarettes or smokeless tobacco are permitted to be mailed to APO/FPO/DPO destination addresses, such mailings under the certain individuals exception must comply with all of the requirements of 472.23, with the exception that mailings may be entered as either Priority Mail Express Military Service (EMMS) or Priority Mail service with USPS Tracking/Delivery Confirmation. Regardless of the service elected, the mailing must bear the full name and mailing address of the sender and recipient.
thanks obama.

you don't inhale pipe or cigar smoke(unless you're a nigger) No tar buildup, no lung cancer, no decrease in lung capacity.

You can get mouth cancer if you smoke a pipe constantly for 60 years, not from the ebil tobacco but from the hot smoke damaging skincells, but you'd literally see it when brushing your teeth and it can be caught and removed quickly.

increased heart rate is literally the only side effect to nicotine (besides acute nicotine poisoning if you're like 12 and pappy forced you to smoke a carton because you stole his camels) besides chemical addiction.

the hot smoke, tar, and burned paper/fillers from your shittier coffin nails is what causes lung cancer.
