Finnish army is conducting an exercise for mechanized battlegroup.

>> The exercise will involve approximately 2,300 persons, including conscripts, reservists and regular personnel from the Armoured Brigade, Karelia Brigade and Pori Brigade. A US Army Europe detachment from US Army Europe's 2nd Cavalry Regiment's Mechanized Infantry Company will take part in the exercise as part of the two armies' bilateral cooperation.

Well, I got arrested for being AWOL, since during an evening leave I passed out on a toilet in a bar.

I served my sentence in a neighbouring company during the weekend, when my own company had a weekend leave. It was not that big of a deal, since I didn't have to participate in any activities of that company - just read in my bunk and sign a book every hour confirming my presence.

Wouldn't still recommend, 2/5

YLE published today a great article about the military situation in the Baltic region. Google Translate seems to work quite well with it.

On map and on paper the picture seems quite bleak, since there's a huge number of Russian units based in the area. But in reality most of them are understaffed.

>> Estonian military intelligence estimated that Russian brigades can mobilize a battlegroup consisting of a single battalion, or about 800 men

Still, the number of planes, helicopters and ships seems quite overwhelming. That's why Finnish military trains extensively in hiding their assets from air observation.

>>
>>29871140
Something like that is happening indeed. This exercise with US troops in Finland is unprecedented and caused quite an uproar in Finnish political circles. Also, US National Guard flies above Finland with F-15's in the coming days.

But still, 2 300 personnel in a Finnish exercise is not that big of a deal. This sort of an maneuver is done twice a year, to give conscripts at the end of their training a final exercise, or as it is called in here, "the finishing war". A combined arms operation, in which the training unit is pushed to its maximum.

The Finnish Army also has a YouTube account!

that's because morons don't know jack shit about anything anymore, and only want to create drama.

Yanks have come to Finland for who knows how many fucking times after the end of the Cold War, and only NOW, with Putin-chan starting shit in the eastern Europe and literally trolling the net, have people started loudly gasping and shitposting about the matter.

Especially co-op winter warfare training exercises are very common, since we tend to have chilly winters. I still recall how people laughed at the stupid amerifats last decade; they arrived to the country with what would almost equal our summer-gear, and our guy had to go and rescue the silly yanks from freezing their toes off.
Later we gave 'em some cozy wool underwear and socks.

Hell, we've even had small visits from our eastern neighbors in the recent years, doing small "friendly exercises" !

FDF's arsenal has always been a weird mix of east and west.

The troops' personal gear is pretty frigging NATO, but the assault-rifle's technically a 7.62x39 "AK". The LMG of choice is PKM, but we got MG3s and Miniguns on our vehicles, and so on.

Those T-55s are mine-clearing vehicles nowadays, not MBTs. Even I was surprised how many MT-LBs we got; I'd only seen local PASIs and few BMP-2s being driven around in recent years.

I'm still a bit dumbstruck that we literally melted some 150+ T-72s few years ago, all in order to completely switch to Leopard 2 platform.

T-55s that aren't modified to engineering vehicles are more or less OPFOR vehicles that play T-90s with simulators. Old T-55s in engineering roles are going to be replaced with Leopard 2A4s in coming decade.

MT-LBs are used by the wartime Mechanized Battlegroups as battle-taxis and they are good enough to get guys from A to B without exposing them to shrapnel or them having to walk.

Those T-72s were east german monkey models. Having them in storage and in maintenance would have been too expensive. It was sad thing for them to go, but their value in modern combat was questionable. In pure tank battle they would have gotten destroyed.

All true. FDF in general has that quite healthy "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" mentality, and those old Cold War era "light armors" definitely are better than nothing for conscripts to move around within. Our company only ever used TEKAs, which as you probably know either have zero armoring, or rumored kevlar padding indoors.

I was aware the T72 were some cheap steel only variants, but even those would've been a nice support for some rear-line troops. Doubt anyone would even want to have 1 on 1 tank battles this day and age anyway.
Having just couple dozen stored up somewhere, with another turned into spare parts for them, would have been a wiser idea IMO.

>At what point does that change the fact that taking it by force, yes an election at gunpoint is force, Russia expanded west.

Eastern Ukraine wants to be unified with Russia and Crimea was overwhelmingly pro-Russian. It was a an organic unification. The Kiev Junta pro-American government tried to seize those areas into a failing entity known as post-1991 Ukraine.

Fun fact, the post-1991 Ukraine is a fictional entity whose borders aren't even recognized or enforced by most its neighbors.

In fact Ukraine isn't a nation. It's just a bunch of wild Russian peasants that escaped into the woods one day to escape feudalism if you study a bit of their history.

>If you repeat a lie often enough you can pretend it is the truth.

Sorry, it was a coup d'etat, inspired by the US Dept. of State. It meets the very definition. America plays dirty, we know this very well.

>It gave Putin the opportunity to invade Ukraine while Ukraine's government was in disarray.

Well there was no government, remember? The pro-Kremlin guy was forced to flee and the US had a Junta on standby, ready to be installed. This junta wasn't accepted by half of the country, especially in the East, and therefore you had an armed insurrection against an un-elected ruling junta.

You're right, the Western-backed Oligarchs that were hand-picked to govern over Kiev by Victoria Nuland and her cronies from the American State Department were not strictly from the military, but they were given the reigns of the stripped down, incompetent Ukrainian military, and of course we know that turned out to be a disaster.

The Eastern separatists are a true grass-roots insurrection against a criminally negligent foreign government, they have moral superiority and should have the blessing of any righteous person - but the Ameritards of /k/ can't get past their irrational Russia hate to come to this conclusion.

So they are on the wrong side of history, again.

Well, I've demonstrated that Russia has both a legal and a moral right to claim Crimea, and all of Ukraine in fact.

But I have to commend Russia for being so restrained. If I were in charge, as soon as the pro-Moscow guy fell, I'd have Spetsnaz parachuting around Kiev, securing roads and a convoy of a Guards Tank Division heading down as a peacekeeping force to rule all of Ukraine and ensure a pro-US puppet is not "elected" by the CIA.

Russia was weak in the 90s and their influence slipped.

I have no excuse for those. I'm not a fan of Bolshevism. But returning Karelia to Finland is not tenable, the populations were displaced in the 40s and never came back.

What a terrible post, especially considering the fact that nearly every Russian thread is "How can puny American tank/plane/boat compete?" and every European post is crying about evil Americans or trying to talk about gun control
But yeah, ban the only people on this board who actually talk about weapons. If anything Europeans shouldn't be allowed to post here at all.

Also, at least half of the posters on /pol/ are Euros

So, straight-up, your blog is disqualified, because NATO said so.

This is how it works.

Obama tells his guy Ben Rhodes to circulate a story about Russians invading Ukraine in the media. Ben calls his friends who write blogs and columns for the papers and presto, you have menstruating women and zero-information dilettantes on /k/ howling at Russia, like wolves howling on a Moon-lit night.

It's quite sad. But I guess they're loyal to their boy Obumbo.
>>
Would it be such a radical idea to the russians to not be such a plague towards their neighbors?
Just withdraw your military inland and demobilize a bit.
That way the eastern NATO members would finally focus on the problems with having american soldiers in their country.
The more russia threatens and bellows, the faster NATO will build up military in Eastern Europe as well as driving Sweden and Finland towards NATO membership.

I know you're being facetious, but that's dumb.

Shutting out opposing discussion is not healthy; as it allows you to live in denial instead of responding to the opposition. Just look at what the Russian's in the thread think happened.

Seconded. It would be a nice experiment to rangeban them for a month or so.

Then follow by banning russians for the next month. Spoilers: the russian shill threads would still be here, because they're mostly anglosphere posters trolling each other.

There's no evidence of Russian forces presence. Not even US intel was able to come up with any proofs despite their sophistry.

game over, retard.

Russia snatched Crimea, and in my opinion, should have occupied Kiev in the same week, which they were very capable of considering the Ukrainian army basically doesn't exist.

This illustrates the insanity and hypocrisy of the pro-Hillary and pro-Obama foreign policy types.

Russia has forces stationed within its borders.

The United States has forces on Russia's borders, and they're crying bloody murder.

Hilarious.

Fucking hilarious.

Thankfully, president Trump is going to execute the Neo-Con establishment and re-arrange America's foreign policy to be less belligerent towards Russia. Because there's no reason for the level of American hostility.

Sure as hell they are.

A nuclear force with the most powerful navy and air forces on the planet. They mean fucking business when they're sitting right at your border and coddling up to ISIS in the south.

I'd be REALLY goddamned worried if I were a strategist in Russia. Their nuclear arsenal is their only deterrent.

What I'm really surprised at, is how mild the Russian response has been.

They should have rolled into Kiev and basically occupied everything East of the Dnieper River.

My own theory is the Russians are still too weak to pull off something of that scale.

Really? Because I've been paying attention since 1991 and they've made nothing but overtures to the West.

The West mocked Yeltin's Russia and now that they have some clout back, they are vilifying Putin's Russia.

>So all the talk about Russia being strong is not true?

Yes.

They just barely recovered from the Yeltsin days. In the dark days of the mid-1990s, seperatist wars were raging, and Russia had to send in police and riot OMON units under contract to try to fight the wars that the conscript armies were too useless to fight. Those were dark days for Russians.

In the 1990s, the budget for new equipment purchases was ZERO rubles, for almost 11 years. Their GPS satellites were falling out of the sky with no money to keep the system running.

Only recently have they regained some of that capability.

Russia is a mess, and they're being portrayed as a Stalinist aggressor.

I assure you, Putin is quite rational.

Had not russia so violently fucked over the Ukies in the EU economic deal none of this would have happened.
In a way EU ought to thank russia for blocking any chance of Ukrainian EU membership seeing that are pretty much the same shit as regular russians but russia is till to blame for Ukraine revolting against their installed puppet Janukovytj. You pulled the strings so hard they snapped and now the entire Ukraine is in a tangle.
