Are most Japanese ships modern?
China has an A-team, B-team and C-team just like any other navy.
A-team are their Aegis-styled DDG, that they have only a dozen at the moment, but another dozen by 2020. Japan has merely six (Atago/Kongo), but also will build more.
B-team are their VLS-equipped Frigates and their non-Aegis, but VLS-equipped long range AAW destroyers. That's the bulk of China's navy, with around 30 ships. For Japan, it is like a dozen or so ships.
C-team are older patrol frigates that both countries have in abundance and are being used for 2nd line duty.
