In canon, the BR55 could fire in semi, 3RB, and full-auto modes. I don't know about the BR85, but it's a fair assumption that it would keep the same fire modes.

It's a holdover from the original. Designers figured that since they were sci-fi guns they didn't need to follow the same design cues as modern guns and promptly made their submachine gun look like an assault rifle and their battle rifle look like a pistol. I'm too lazy to find the interview.
