I will be heading into the deserts of SE Oregon pretty often starting in a few months.

I've also gotten a new job with a much improved income.

So I'm looking to get into long-range shooting as a hobby. I am a few years cold, having only shot and hunted with my dads guns growing up. I'm looking for the absolute longest-range potential I could possibly get for under $1000 (Or $1500 if the argument is good enough.)

Preferably a .308, as I understand that to be the cheapest caliber to practice with, that can also be used for hunting. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

I was initially looking at a Remington 700 LR, but I've heard and seen nothing but shit talk about Remington's made in the last decade.

So the current apple of my eye is a Savage.

Thoughts? Also what the fuck is that thing attached to the top of the stock?

If you haven't yet, look at Tikka's offerings. They're exceptionally good rifles for the price, and Tikka offers a 1 MOA guarantee on all of their rifles. My T3 Lite Stainless is definitely more accurate than I am.

SWFA and Vortex make great entry level scopes, if you've not already got some glass.

>SE Oregon
are you a sand person?
If so, GTFO, if not, you must watch for them.

cheek riser, it is for raising your cheek.

adjustable cheek rest.
>>
>>29795260
It works pretty well on hot days, to spread your ass cheeks, and get a good breeze in there, to deter seamp taint.
just get naked and squat on it.
>>
>>29795162
There are guns better for long range than that, even within savages own line for a similar price.
there is a lot of research and reading you need to do before you even consider buying a long range rifle again.
>>
>>29795260

Thanks

>>29795258

I am not. Gloriously few minorities in Oregon.

>>29795239

I've seen Tikka mentioned a lot,and while I do prefer to buy American, I'm open. Any recommended variants? Do you like the Lite Stainless?

>>29795349

I agree, that's what this threads about. Not actually putting the money down for around 3 months. Will be doing plenty of reading.
>>
>>29795393
No, if you live on the east side of the cascadrs you are a sand person, and regularly eat human flesh.
like, tuskan raiders bred with hills have eyes folk.
>>
>>29795413

I live in Tigard, in the suburbs of Portland. And yeah there's a lot of hicks out that way.

I'm doing some work for a bunch of rich fuckers who are capitalizing on the weed legalization. Weed isn't my cup of tea but holy shit if there isn't money in that area right now.

The new standard is 6.5 Creedmoor. Do NOT get a .308.

Ruger Precision Rifle or a Savage.

6.5 creedmore is shit.
alright, it is about the best round you can get for long range in an AR10 style package, but for a bolt action, nearly anything is better (though you are right 6.5>.308) but 25-.06, .270 win, .270 WSM, 7mm-08, 7mm mag, 7mm wsm, 7mm RUM, 30-06, 300 win mag, 300RUM, .338 fed, .338 WM are all superior t o the 6.5, and most of those are cheaper all around.
>>
>>29795632

I live 15 minutes outside of Portland. But apparently there's a meme about 1/4th of my state.

>>29795497

I'm only buying one rifle, and I'll need several hundred rounds of practice, and creedmoor looks like it's more than a dollar a shot average? Fuck that.
>>
>>29795693
Don't listen to these hipster twats. .308 is fine for an average to above average shooter. Most of us aren't good enough or dedicated enough to max it out
>>
>>29795693
Unless you are doing an AR build, and shooting competition there is literally 0 reason to get 6.5 cuckmore.
>>
>>29795677
uhh sorry but no

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoXF2a-Y7sM
>>
>>29795693
If you wanted a little extra potential, without much more cost you could go .270, 7mm mag, 30-06, 300 WM.
no reason to buy a meme round that is fairly terrible compared to long action calibers.
>>
>>29795729

And I certainly am not good enough.

I just want a caliber that I can practice a lot with, without absurdly expensive ammo, that is big enough to hunt with (eg not a .22), . .308 seems to fit the bill.

Question that's unrelated to my original question: What caliber do you guys think would do the job for Moose hunting? Might head up into AK in the next year or two and I hear moose meat is divine.
>>
>>29795766
I dont even have to watch your video.
For example, you can get .270 win with better BC, and a higher muzzle vel. 6.5 mememore is shit (unless out if an AR type gun, i admit, it is about the best that will fit in standard AR actions)
and we arent even getting into the magnums, 6.5 has the BC of a brick compared to 7mm
>>
>>29795162
6.5 creedmoor is going to be your caliber of choice. But if you want to stick to the sub par 308 fine.

In sub $1000 range ( sans optics)

Howa 1500 barraled action with heavy varmint barrel + Bell and carlson stock , + harris bipod + rail and rings is about $800 . toss in a swfa fixed 10x and your allset for about $1100
>>
>>29795799
Go with whatever gun you are most comfortable with. People will try and say you need a big magnum but around here .243 and .270 are both fairly common moose cartridges.
>>
>>29795677
Oh... So thats why 6.5creedmoor isnt the most popular round in the PRS ?
>>
>>29795851
Thats what makes it a meme round.
if your running an AR type, it makes sense, if you are running a bolt gun its retarded, unless you are insanely recoil sensitive.
>>
The downside of the .270 is that it is a long action.

If your going long action why not just go 300 win mag.

In short actions 308 for non reloaders. 6.5creedmoor for those that reload or can afford $30 for 20rnds.
>>
>>29795896
You sound like a buthurt 308 shooter.

If not... Lay out a justifyied argument why 6.5creedmoor is a "meme" round.

Because I see a round that has higher BC. With lower powder usage, and better accuracy.
>>
>>29795851
More people are going for 6mm over 6.5.

http://precisionrifleblog.com/2015/10/12/best-rifle-caliber/

>>29795896
PRS is pretty much a bolt action competition
>>
>>29795912
>$30 for 20rnds.
140gr AMAX 6.5 creedmoor is similar to 175gr FGMM price-wise.
>>
>>29795954
The trade off to goto 6mm creedmoor is very short barrel life.

They start showing wear at 1000 and many prs shooter replace at 1250rds, and they are burnt out at 1500rds.

On the flip side the 6.5 lasts 3000+ rounds

If i was a sponsored shooter i would run a 6mm creed or 6mmx47
>>
>>29796026
I do like the lapua, but I would go with the 6.5 creedmoor myself.
>>
>>29796049
I would have done a 6.5x47... If i could find the brass. Creedmoor brass is hard to find but i can find it. Lapua brass is impossible to find.

I like that lapua uses small rifle primers.
>>
>>29796091
I like the easier to get 6.5 creedmoor factory ammo.
>>
Any way OP.

If you want a factory rifle. Tika. Is the top choice.

If your willing to do a very very small amount of work ( litterly bolting action into stock. ) then the Howa 1500 ( from brownells @ $425) and the B&C medalist stock from midway usais the best deal going.

Scope wise.
Swfa is a great way to go. The vortex is another good option.

But your best bet for sub $300 scopes is a fixed power 10x. And swfa makes the best.

If you can swing $600 for a scope get thw swfa 3-15. Or the 39HD or hunt for a deal on a vortex pst.

Other scope options are the bushnell elite fixed 10x that midway sells. It is sub $300 but not as good as the swfa.

If you can swing $1000 for a scope get the burris xtr2. Or vortex viper pst.

At 1200 get the swfa 5-20HD or vortex viper, or hunt for a deal on a nf or sb.
>>
>>29796196
The howa1500 action from brownells. Us a stupid good deal
>>
>>29795896
Nobody uses ARs in PRS. Or any semi autos whatsoever.

You don't have any idea what you're talking about.

You should stop.
