Why are the M4 and m16 used over the m1a in long range desert combat deployments? My experience with my m1a has been a series of dead accurate iron sights and a bigger bullet. What's your opinion?

Former cream corn DM here.
Carried a M14 in Afghanistan on first tour, then KAC's m110 on 2nd.
M14 has a burdensome logistics chain and is hard to keep accurate over the duration of a year long deployment. It's heavy to ruck and I'm 6ft3.
The M110 was a fucking dream compared to it.
I've got a dpms g2 hunter now that is sub MOA that I'd highly recommend if anyone is looking for a DMR

DM here again, the scar is a great battle rifle but you need a 20 inch barrel to get the most out of a .308. (The scar has 1/12 twist instead of 1/10). Especially when you're having it eat ammo that isn't tailored for the shorter barrel.

They're used as designated marksman's rifles some, but really don't give a range or lethality advantage over an M16 with an ACOG. Which is good to ~600m with M855 and 750m+ with mk262.

Not me, but:
When I was in Afghanistan I witnessed alot of short comings with M855 ammo. But no issues with the AR platform. As a DM I was given one of those refurb M14s and was initially excited but mine kept going out of spec (would go from MOA groups to 6-8 moa groups) due to rough handlgolden. onditions. I ended up using a loaner MK12 Mod0 for most of the deployment and never had issues with it. So the m14 went in the same category as the M249 SAW for me, great when the damn thing will work! Both platforms have left a bad taste in my mouth.
I wasnt one of the super cool, high speed low drag spec ops guys so no hands on a KAC or SASS platform while in country to give 2 cents on that. MK262 Mod 1 ammo was awesome and my Mark One Deuce's barrel was never fouled by anything else. Now as a civilian I favor the Mk318 SOST round for my ARs.

It's effectively a modified bolt action rifle with an infinite number of places for debris to ingress and cause catastrophic malfunctions. It's a great range toy if you glass bed the stock, but then it's no longer a practical military rifle. The accuracy is terrible without a decent glass bedding job or an obscenely heavy chassis system.
Overall it's an out dated rifle in a world where plenty of vastly superior options exist that cost even less.
