30-30 or 30-06 are great choices. I have a marlin and love it, though it doesn't reach out nearly as far as the 30-06. But out to 150ish yards isn't out of the question. I have a Remington 750 which was actually a mis buy since I was looking for a semi auto 30-06 that wasn't a garand. It is a good rifle, but not a "battle rifle".
>>
Answer: it depends where you are hunting.

Pennsylvania.

Winchester Model 70 in .270 will kill any whitetail at any reasonable range with comfy light recoil.

Deer aren't hard to kill though. If you hunt at short ranges only, a compact 30-30 will be nicer.

Really anything bigger than .22 will drop a durr with proper shot placement.
You'd be good with anything from .243-.35rem.
Personally I like .308 & '06 but there's penalty of options out there for 7,6,&6.5mm that'll drop nearly anything.
>>
>>29772784

What's the terrain like in your area? If there a lot of open fields and long shots then something like a .270 or .243 would be good for the superior range and accuracy. If you're in a denser, wooded area then something heavier like a .308 or 30-06 would be your best bet. The stronger punch and heavier bullet is less likely to have its trajectory changed by the dense brush.

Said no one ever. That's by far the worst round for anything

>>
>>29772879
I think the point is that killing deer isn't very hard and fudds have been doing it with that dumb-ass "brush-bucking" round for a century.
>>
>>29772873
The name literally means Penn's woods in Latin.

>>29772879
There are much better calibers, but it is fine for use at typical deer ranges in the woods.

You have to be 18 to use this website

Yeah, but I seriously doubt the whole state is one big forest. I'm willing to bet that somewhere in Pensylvania there are farm fields, clearcuts, meadows, etc.

Yes, there are those too.

What twist rate is needed to stabilize such a long, heavy bullet?
>>
>>29773098
Don't listen to that guy.

.243 is pretty much the minimum for an effective deer caliber. You can easily get a .270 or 30-06 that will hit harder and offer you a wider margin of error, i.e. be a more effective weapon.
>>
I vote for the 6.5x55, which is basically just a short-action .270. It's nice and mild to shoot and gets the job done.

.243 and 30-30 are the classic choices, along with the .270.
>>
>>29773159
Get out of here retard. There are more deer rifles in 30-06 than 30-30 and .270 combined, if we're going to talk about classic.
>>
>>29773098
I couldn't tell ya, I just shoot them out of a Sako Forester.

>>29773138
.243 can take any game in North America. It's a fine cartridge that should have been killing goods in 'Nam.
>>
>>29773214

You shoot a grizzly with a .243 and let me know how that turns out for ya.
>>
>>29773226
I'll shoot him 5x in the face from the hip then I'll come over to your mom's house and fuck her in the bear carcass and give your little sister the leftovers from my dick, bitch.
>>
>>29773214
Can =/= best at or should

Sometimes things don't go down the way you expect them to. I made a through-and-through lung shot on a big hog with a 7mm rem mag and it travelled three-quarters of a mile before I found it. Maybe if I'd hit it with a .243 it wouldn't have been a through-and-through and I never would have found it.

If someone's buying a new rifle for sport hunting, they might as well get something that will give them a little extra.

I am deeply intimidated by your internet toughness.

You shot that big hog with too much caliber. Two-forty-tree would have set him down perfect.

Aught-six is too much gun for a whitetail, IMHO.

Mazda Miata.
>>
>>29773362
Yes, but not on a .300lb boar where the bullet has obviously expanded and there's a river of blood coming out of the exit side.

>>29773359
If it isn't destroying lots of meat it's not too much. Anyway, it can always be loaded down, but you can't load a 30-30 up to be a solid elk or big hog round the way you can a 30-06.

I shoot a .270 myself, but I'd take a 30-06 over it for anything bigger than a whitetail, and that versatility is a virtue.

PA hunter here

I hunt with a Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge. It's a cheap shotgun (like $300) that I've taken two deer with so far.

Remington 700 BDL in anything..

I own two. .30-06 and a .223 SPS Tactical model

they both knock dicks in the dirt.

fucking noobs.

PA hunter here. I hunt with 7mm-08, but I consider 30-06 to be the best deer round. Go with 30-06 OP, you can't go wrong, it's a solid round
>>
>>29773459
You use slugs to get your deer?
>>
>>29775889
We use 00 buck here when hunting deer. Seen some damn good lucky shots including a single ball smack dab on the spine of a spike.
