Personal preferences aside, is there anything wrong with using an A2 front sight gas block on an AR-15? Does it affect accuracy more negatively than low profile gas blocks? Does it increase the chance of barrel damage if something strikes it hard enough?

Nope

Nope. Use what you want, they're all good. But A2 wins in the aesthetics category.

The only reason people don't like them is because they minorly block your view with optics. Some people swear that you can't notice it with a 4x scope, but I fucking noticed it every time. Not the biggest problem in the world, but I prefer not to deal with it.
If you don't mind, then no, nothing wrong with fixed front sights.
will using the sling swivel on the sight make it no longer a free-float barrel?
>>29767726
using the sling would shift your POI, yes.
>>29767726
Yes, even grabbing very hard on a VFG can have a small effect of POI. Small, but it is there.
The standard handguards setup is sold as free floating, but it really isn't. There is a reason people invest for actual free float handguards.

Wait so if I buy something like an aero precision free float rail for my a2 middy, it won't actually be freefloat?
>>29767977
if the vfg is attached to a free float rail it will stay freefloated

I plan on buying a new handguard for a light and possibly a qd sling mount. I'm genuinely surprised a 9 inch handguard only weights ~6 ounces.

yeah, it gets in the way when using an optic whereas a flip up is going to be infinitely superior
