Why didn't shields like this (Narrow/Spiked) become popular? They seem to be effective at blocking strikes and parrying.

Because most shields were for formation fighting or keeping someone off your left side, so they're bigger?
If you want to strike with shields look at bucklers.

I'd guess because soldiers using shields on a real battleground aren't going to be trained in parrying and other shit like that, and neither would they be interested in that fancy bullshit.
All they'd want is a solid shield, not too heavy, that can be used to block enemy strikes. All the fancy shit would be of no use to 90%+ footsoldiers.

Most people say no.
But those people think that gun fights are all about the draw.
The point is to have you weapon drawn before it REALLY goes down.
Which is easy if you dont have your head buried in a phone and have situational awareness.

Metal shields are too expensive and that would be complex to make with no real benefit
