But just to clarify to others. Obviously you don't tourniquet for a scratch, but a wound from a round, deep cut, excessive bleeding, etc. Always tourniquet.
The kind of bleeding you look for specifically is bright red and pulsing, this means its blood from the artery. Always fucking tourniquet (x2 if needed, the second ~4 inches above.)
Then gauze and Israeli bandage the actual entrance wound/etc. If it's an amputation, it isn't really a priority.

GSWs are so simple in the field. On a scale of first-aid to neuro-surgery, treating a GSW even in the ER and eventually on the surgeons table is relatively basic, but having said that you cannot "treat" a complex trauma on your own with a pocket knife a stick and a bottle of whiskey, no matter what some internet kommando tells you.
You are going to get a shit ton of folks who come into this thread and become certified internet experts, in particular the fresh EMT who makes grandiose stories of life saving efforts while in reality grandma needs to get to dialysis and you are one blood pressure check behind.
Trauma care even at the advanced level is still ABCs or CABs (depending on school of thought, there isn't a "wrong way" in medicine and anyone that follows a cookbook word for word rather than using algorithms as proven guidelines to be deviated from on a case by case basis, is a fucking moron.)
For isolated injuries, first you have to identify them and make sure you complete a head to toe picking the most life threatening of injuries to deal with first if dealing with multiple.
Stop the bleeding using basic first aid techniques to include-
>Pressure
>Elevation
>Packing
>Tourniquet
(order depends on type of injury, equipment on hand and level of experience)
Return to deal with less important injuries, package and extricate.
You cannot "cure" a major trauma. Infection is common and well known, but lets not forget compartment syndrome, rhabdomyolosis, vascular trauma to include clots down the road, nerve damage, list goes on.
I am only a veteran Paramedic who has had maybe 10 "good" GSWs in my career. Good being cases where we are talking about multiple holes, big holes, life threatening locations, situations where EMS and our interventions actually made a difference. I am not referring to the idiot that shot his hand cleaning his handgun.

Gauze and bandage, completely cover any thing that has leaked out in that bandage (organs). Your body can handle having lower organs outside of your torso moreso than an arterial wound. Apply pressure, prep for evacuation to a surgeon.
For a groin wound, spread legs, gauze, tie wrap around the waist (a belt ideally) and route it in a manner that forces pressure into the wound. Push legs together, take another bandage and tie legs together for more pressure on wound.
