So I was looking at my nuggets oil kit and I thought it would make for a good flask only downside I'm not sure what to use to clean out the remaining oil... Obviously I don't want oil in my whiskey but considering it's so old and caked on I have a feeling it might still taste fucked but anyways any suggestions on the best way to make it clean by removing old oil I was thinking high percentage rubbing alcohol and some rock salt and then multiple washings of boiling water? If you think it's a retarded idea I don't really care it's sturdy as fuck and would hold a few shots worth on the go... Just trying to find use from all this surplus shit that's not really relevant anymore..

Here's what you do anon.
Acquire some xylene, the god-tier non-polar solvent. You can find it at pretty much any hardware store, usually sold as a paint/oil remover like Klean-Strip.
Next, get some acetone. You can find that likely in the same aisle.
>Rinse out the oil canister with the xylene, multiple washes will likely be necessary. Scrub with a brush to loosen any build-up
>Do a secondary rinse in acetone, which will dissolve the xylene. Again, multiple rinses to ensure you've removed the xylene.

Acetone vaporizes completely, leaving behind only the metal, and any trace compounds not dissolved by the xylene or acetone.
Also, give it a good washing with soap and water, just to be safe.

Klean Strip products are awesome for stuff like this. I cleaned my Mosin oil can with mineral spirits that I had left over after making a batch of Ed's Red, worked fine but I still sure as hell wouldn't put whiskey in it.

What's the finish like on the inside OP do you know?
I would worry about it being rough like cast iron and holding oil in the little nooks and crannies. Like when you get a cast iron pan oiled up it stays that way for a long time.
Now you might clean it out REALLY well, but then you out some 40 percent alcohol in there and leave it for a few hours which might leech out some of that caked on good ol gun oil and then you puke your guts up because you ingested petroleum distillates.
From a chemistry standpoint I can't see why your idea wouldn't work in terms of cleaning out oil, but the residual oil would probably make anything you drank out of that at least mildly poisonous.

I had the same idea with mine, op. I washed the insides with acetone to break up most of the cosmoline (fun fact, cosmoline-imbued acetone burns A LOT). Then I put it through the industrial washer at work since I figured the high heat and everything would melt and rinse out any residue. The insides are sparkly clean as far as I can tell, but I've never had the guts to actually try it...
