TL'DR :got robbed, looking for a first timers firearm

hey /k/ im a regular from /pol/ and /x/ and have nevr touched a firearm before,
but last night i came home to find someone in my house robbing it, they fled but the encounter still scared me shitless, i gave it thought and was hoping you guys could recommend me a good first timers firearm for self defense if it ever happens again, thanks
>>
I recommend a Hi-Point. Very cheap, reliable, lightweight firearms that are extremely rugged in design.

Shotguns. Remington makes good shit. If you're in the market for pistols, you can't go wrong with Ruger.
>>

Seconded. It's good quality, but ugly as hell and under 200 burgerbucks.

>>
>>29695546
whats your price range
personally i would go for a .367 revolver or a .40 semi auto like a Smith & Wesson SD40 they ususaly go for around 400 bucks brand new
or maybe a glock if you are willing to pay a little more
If its only home defense a good idea is a solid 12ga like a mossberg if you cant handle the recoil go go for a 20 ga
in my persoal opinion you cant go wrong with a revolver like a .357 they are simple to use and cheap especially if you buy 2nd hand cant go wrong with a revolver
take some time and go to ranges that rent guns feel some shoot some and get the one you shoot best with.
>>
>>29695573
This not even memeing it's a cheap good fun;ugly as hell but it'll get the job done you're not gonna be operating with it in a 5 hour long fire fight, most of the time the sight of a gun is all you need. It is ugly as sin

I heard glocks were pretty good, my buddy said hed let me try out his gloxk 42/43 or whatever

How much do they usually run?
>>
>>29695546

Glock 19 is affordable, reliable and small enough to conceal easily.

But you should shop around and get a feel for what handgun feels good in your hand. Maybe rent a few out and see what you shoot well. Because that is the best gun at the end of the day regardless of brand or caliber.

I'm not the guy you are responding too but wheelguns are pretty solid for being reliable a they usually carry pretty deadly loads. stupid fucks like you that don't know how to work a gun they are your best friend. easy cleaning, easy use, simple design.

Get a full size revolver in .357. You could also get a decent scattergat for the same price and load it with 000 buck or #4 bird if you in apartments.
>>
>>29695682
Thank you for the help, ill definetly get into the feel and research,
>>
>>29695673
where i live anywhere from 600-700
the good thing about them is that they are simple and easy to use but i dont like how they feel in my hand i mean i've owned gen 1 and gen 3 glock 17 and they have the ergonomics of a cinder block anyway you might like the way they feel i personaly dont
dont overlook the SD40 and the M&Ps they are very similar and cheaper as well with much better ergonomics
they are pretty reliable too

Pistol? Glock 17
Shotgun? Mossberg 500
Rifle? AR-15, some kind of AK, SKS

Honestly, any gun that isn't a potato will work (even a hi-point), as long as you're willing to train with it.
>>
>>29695546
Try Google. /k/ is 20% good advice, 80% total retarded bullshit, and you don't know enough about guns at this point to know the difference.

There is way more that goes into carrying a gun than buying one, btw. If you've never even touched a gun before, just up and buying one is a really dumb idea. Get some basic firearms training, shoot a few rental guns, lurk moar on self-defense threads elsewhere.
>>
>>29695546
>Smith Wesson M&P-15 Sport (5.56mm rifle)
>Mossberg 590 (12 gauge and 20 gauge shotgun)
>RIA 1911 (pistol available in 9mm, .40 and .45, all are equally good, pick the one you feel you can shoot well)
>Ruger GP-100 (revolver in .357, meaning you can shoot cheaper and less powerful .38s for practice)

Pick one (or maybe two) of these.
Ask the guy at the store to teach you the Four Rules of safety.

Practice with the gun once or twice a month (shoot maybe 250 or so rounds per trip), practice with ball/FMJ ammo, use hollowpoints for defense.

Use CLP or Ballistol to clean the guns every other month or so (or every third), which means open up or field strip the guns, spray them down, then letting it sit and soak in for a while (to make sure it leaves a very slight protective/lubricating film), then just gently wipe it off with a good enough rag, then reassemble.

There's lots of easy guides on YouTube too.

If you end up finding shooting to be fun, but think it's a bit expensive to do it as much as you want, buy a Ruger 10/22 rifle or Smith & Wesson M&P-22 pistol, and a brick of .22LR ammunition.

Remember that when practicing, you should always wear hearing protection, even with small calibers (they can do cumulative damage to your ears, even if those little pops don't feel like they hurt your ears, people have lost hearing and developed tinnitus because they thought .22LR was hearing safe)

>>29695573
OP didn't say he was a poorfag.
A Hi-Point works but for just 100 dollars more he can get a Rock Island Armory 1911, which is several orders of magnitudes better.
>>

Don't buy a Remington made in the past 8 years OP, you'll be disappointed.
Ruger is great.

>>29695658
>or killed trying to be a hero
That shit is kind of rare, besides, 99.9% of the time, criminals (especially the smooth ones) will do a 360 and moonwalk away if presented with the lethal threat of a gun.
That said, firearms are lethal weapons, and while you can threaten with them, you ONLY SHOOT TO KILL, NEVER EVER SHOOT TO WOUND OR TO SCARE
>>
>>29695546
>/pol/ & /x/

Are you sure you're mentally fit to carry a firearm?
>>
>>29695673
Glocks are good, but they're not for everyone, many hate the grip or trigger.
Try one out before you decide.
The Smith & Wesson M&P9, Sprinfield XDM, Steyr M9A1 and Ruger American Pistol, all have the same characteristics, but the grips and triggers might suit you better.

>>29695713
>birdshot
While that can certainly fuck a guy up really bad (google birdshot wounds to see what I mean, not fucking pretty), the lethal range is short and there are better options.
Plus, birdshot actually will give the cartoonishly large spread that you see in videogames.

>>
>>29696476
True, but again, OP hasn't said he's a poorfag.
>>
>>29696441
Responding to your comment on birdshot. While I don't advocate the use of bird shot for home defense, your comment about the large spread is invalid. My turkey gun gets a pattern of 14 inches at 45 yards. OP and almost all home defense shotgun users won't be shooting past 10 yards at most, usually less and sometimes far far less. Spread pattern does not matter much. No shotgun is going to have a spread of 6 feet in 10 yards. The only difference could be if OP has to go outside and tend to some bad people that threaten his life. Even then a shotgun with buck would be better than trying to hit someone with his newly bought second hand whatever handfun especially if it has a decent choke tube in it. Still would never recommend any bird shot for it though which I do agree on with you.

Go to a local range.

Most of them will let you trya whole caliber of pistols for under 20 bucks plus ammo you need to buy to put through the rentals(to make sure your not bringing your shitty hot handloads)

bring your own ear and eye protection

shoot a bunch and pick the one you like.

i suggest 9mm. but caliber wars are another thing.
>>
>>29695658
>9mm
>>
Nothing would've helped you if you weren't carrying it. If you had kept an unlocked gun in your house and you weren't carrying, then in your situation all you would have done is armed your intruder while leaving yourself defenseless. Get a glock 42
>>
>>29695682
The flock 19 is not easily concealable. It's a bitch to cc. There's a reason why they're standard police firearms, police don't have to conceal them

>hey /k/ im a regular from /pol/ and /x/ and have nevr touched a firearm before,

Fantastic. Welcome to the club brother. You're about to get into a world of preparing your mind and body for tactical situations. What I recommend is a Colt LE-6920 5.56x39 AR-15 for your first gun. Lightweight, modular, highly effective in defensive and combat scenarios and is drop dead reliable.

The AR-15 is hands down the best fighting weapon you can own in the American landscape. Don't be a victim and always be prepared. I strongly recommend having at least one within arms reach in every room of your house.

Pic is a tad dated but still relevant. Bear in mind that while '/k/ approved' each gun on this list has its own pros and cons. Several of them have alternate variants too.
>>
>>29695546
Go to a local gun range and rent out a few different handguns. Definitely try a glock 17 or 19 because they're easy to find and are quality, affordable weapons. You might also like a Sig SP2022 or a Beretta 92FS.

If you're looking at a shotgun, you can't really go wrong with a Mossberg 500. It's quality, affordable, and easy to use.

If you're looking for a rifle, you'll want something semi automatic. I personally use my AR-15 for home defense, but you could go with an AKM or something else using an intermediate cartridge. Hell, you could just cheap out and get a Ruger 10/22 and just dump a bunch of .22 into a home invader. A .22 will kill someone just fine, though I think many of us would agree that you should bring a bigger, better round to the fight if you can.

Point being, there are a plethora of different options that you could choose from. Shoot guns that your friends or family have. Rent guns and try them out at a local range. Take a beginners rifle and handgun class there. Learn how to operate a weapon safely. Then find something that you like that fits your budget.

>honestly OP

listen here
your guns are decided by how much TIME your willing to invest in them

> aka im going to leave it sitting around and ill use it next time someone break in aside from that i might forget its there
shotgun
get a 12 gauge,

Pros:
you can get a variety of ammunition to determine how lethal you want. and if you just want to hurt the shit out of someone empty out the bird shot in a shell and load it with rock salt
you don't really have to aim, just point in the right direction and fire.
with a pump action its an unmistakable sound, and if some dumbass hears that they will probably flee

Cons:
large, bulky, not quick,

options:
expensive - mossberg 500
cheap, - mossberg maverick 88

>aka im going to take it to a range and fire it at least once every two months in order to attain a certain level of proficiency
handgun
9mm

Pros:
quick, light, easy to carry, can be concealed,

cons:
1 shot at a time means if your not gonna take the time to learn your weapon, your gonna miss the first shot, and probably the second one too cause your nerves are wreaked
best case scenario he books it... worst... hes armed... and better.... and your dead.

expensive: glock something,
cheap: honestly a hi-point. they are cheap as shit but i have one and its not a bad weapon, its just not a good weapon.

EITHER WAY:
learn your gun man.
dont get one and let it sit and expect it to work like magic when the time comes.
dont be that asshole that fiddles with the safety because they have never fired it.
dont neglect it, because it will neglect you.
at LEAST put a few rounds through anything once a year (hopefully more)

glad your ok. hope this helps

and i know /k/ is gonna bitch at my "expensive" and "cheap" options but look at it from a nogunz;
