My grandfather was a seal early in the vietnam conflict. He has a little box filled with medals I can't remember since the last time I saw inside the box it was 1997.
He hated the experience so much he became an alcoholic hippie back home, divorced my grandmother and just sort of fucked off until he got his life back together in the 80s.

I was helping him clean his garage when I was 8, came across the box filled with medals when I dropped it from a shelf onto a workbench. He opened it up, showed me a couple, then closed it up and went back to cleaning.
I asked him something like 'what did you do in the army' and he said

I went something like 'what' and he clarified

So I asked him what he did in the navy and he said

That was it and all he's ever said to me about it. I thought he was just pulling my leg so I asked my dad about it and he told me it was true and to never ask him about.
He's still alive, but that was the first and last time he's ever said anything about it to me or even around me.
