Why isn't our weaponry kept secret? I'm looking at the ASW drone ship thread and it seems this is the kinda shit we'd want to hide from our enemies right?

Yet with cursory searching you can find the exact specifications, armaments, details, flaws, weaknesses and strengths of some of our most expensive weapons/vehicles. Its like trying to play poker with your hand shown, idgi.

pic semi related, you can see details on how our experimental weapons are supposed to operate and its the first thing on google. doesn't this violate some kind of opsec thing?

that's already all common knowlege, that's like saying that you should keep math and geograpy a national secret
>>
Think about how long the F-117 and B-2 were kept under wraps. Assume there's some shit they're not telling us.
>>
The more the enemy knows, the more scareder they'll be

I'm pretty sure that doesn't apply to the LCS. What a fucking joke of a ship.

One: There is smaller scale (reletively speaking) shit they are not telling us. Every now and again we get a peek. UBL raid was one of them. This directly conflicts with point two, but...

Two: As free citizens we have a right to know what our goverment is spending our money on, (In general terms). For national security of course we dont need to know exact specifics, just generalized ideas.

To counter tactics and whatnot, specifics are not just wanted, they are needed.

Three: The us is so fucking far ahead of other nations operationally that it really doesnt matter. The best of those nations are still trying to counter the F-22, a plane that first flew in 1997 and reached operational capacity in 2005, over a decade ago.

Most of the stuff that the government actually wouldn't want the enemy to know is classified under (sub class FOUO, Sensitive,) Classified, Secret, Top Secret, or whatever is above that. It's mostly the actual technology that goes into making the stuff, so that it can't be reverse engineered then improved upon.
The stuff that is classified, and is cool to read about, you likely have not been able to find on the internet. It's mostly pretty boring technical stuff such as a single board's schematic out of an entire JDAM's construction files.

The things that matter are not coming up in your google search. Don't think that because you saw some stuff, that it is all there is. DARPA has been controlling insect flight paths, heights, and speeds for a while now, by inserting flexible plastic coated controlling units in them at the pupa stage so that it is formed into the biology of the growing insect. I mean even that itself is no longer classified because the technology has improved enough for that info to be obsolete, if that gives you any idea of the type of thing that is actually a secret weapon that we have no information about.

Half of that "no-secret" is vaporware.
>>
>>29566238
By the time we know about it our real enemies have known about it and the military is already on to the next thing.

Aside from what has already been mentioned, a big reason this stuff comes out is deterrnce. What good would nukes do if no one knows you have them? Whos going to think twice about annexing your country if they dont know about your kickass air defence system and impregnable ground defenses? You dont need to know specifics. But you need to know it exists and you dont want to find out what it does

In order to get funding for most weapons programs, Congress has to be briefed. Congressional reports are in the public domain. Not everything can be black budget either.

Also, there's different levels of secrecy because it can be hard to control all of the information between multiple corporations and universities. After the cold war, most of the government responsibilities were offloaded to these institutions due to cost and job growth in the private sector. Unclassified information needs to be shared to them in order for collaboration. Academic papers are published on this material, which is good for personal development but bad for secrecy.

If we were still in the cold war and everything was government-based instead of corporation-based, you'd hear a lot less about weapon projects and more about UFOs.

The US government knows more about other nation's weapon programs via espionage than what is publicly available.
