Why can the Mk. 46 not take STANAG mags?

You'd think special forces, more so than anyone else, would appreciate the ability to use allies' ammo in a pinch.

I'm no operator, but I've been a SAW Gunner before. Using magazines never worked well with any of the guns I was issued (and I never had problems aside from that). I've heard a few different reasons why, but I don't think it's a feature that really adds much to the usefulness of the weapon.

Weight savings.
Also the fact that the rate of fire when using the magazines is ridiculously high regardless of the gas setting due to feeding differently than from a belt.

I know of no engagements where the mag feed was actually used.
Ingenious & neat on paper, but of little use in real combat conditions.

Let me guess: US military? That's what you get for refusing to buy long term maintenance kits and do proper parts replacement during its lifetime as described in the manual. But not worries, the US army knows best, right?

No worries, that is.
Or not to worry. Take your pick.

it does add some usefulness, when you run out of belt ammo you can still use your buddy magazines and keep firing but as anon said the RPM is fuckign insane for 30rnds mags and you need to push the mag constantly so the gun doesn't jam

it's a nice feature but need more work on it to be practical

You'll find that that's a mag issue, not a fault of the gun.
>>
>>29556617
If you're at the point where your SAWs have to use regular mags you're probably out of regular mags too.

>well like what if you're in a firefight and one guy gets injured so he can't shoot anymore and like his ammo is the only ammo you have left
Just use his rifle then.

SAW has same role as rifle. good call

>SAW with 30 round mag can perform in its role
Wew.
>>
>>29558136
The SAW's role is as a machine gun, how are you supposed to fulfill that role with 30rd mags

Anyhow, I was a saw gunner, I never had issues with the magwell, it fed just fine with pmags. It just burns through them instantly. The point of the magwell isn't so you can continue to be the squad machine gunner, it's so you still have a weapon if you run out of ammo.

The whole point of the mag well was so the gun would fit the request of the army.

It's not the first time that chairforce POGs make requirements which have little to do with real use.

Who cares if no one actually uses that feature?

How much weight? Im sure the better to have it and not need applies to a soldiers weapon system more than anything else
>>
>>29559808
So bottle openers and door breaching rods, along with pen and pencil holders, printers, and a GPS all should be included on the weapon? Because weight doesn't exist at all?
>darkest of meme

Using a mag in a SAW, or in my case C9, is a last resort. They feed like shit and just cause problems

on point.

I understand mayne, obviously anyone who has experience with these platforms (maybe such as your self ) would understand what works and what doesnt, just throwing around a question, why pass up a chance to interact with my internet friends

The magazine feature is generally hated and not useful.

The magazine feature exists for if you run out of beltfed ammo. The MK46 us lighter than the M249. Therefore an Mk46 gunner is able to carry more belted ammo. Therefore they won't need the magazine feeding feature.
