An assault weapon is anything that the people who give themselves the right to redefine terms halfway through a breath feel like banning today. Since it's not a technical definition, it can be stretched to include anything that can even conceivably be used as a weapon, much less any firearm, regardless of what kind.

Why is this so hard?
If I have a select fire AR with something like an echo trigger installed, is that an assault rifle? It's not a machine gun by ATF definitions of course.
