Anyone here got any suggestions for an accurate, reliable bolt-action that isn't much above £500?

This is a pretty good deal if you can find a decent scope: http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/savage-axis-blued-243-win

I think you need to get some barrels of black powder and find a tunnel under parliament.

Is there anything else I should be looking out for?
I'm not licensed yet (and won't be for a while). I used to shoot in my teens using the club's guns so I know how to use and maintain a rifle but I've been off the scene for years.

Should I go for wood over an ABS stock?
Will my huge hands snag on some models?

Also, are there any calibres I should stay away from because they're rare a Estonian standard that only one company still makes?

Depends on what you want to do with i
>Should I go for wood over an ABS stock?
Wood is fine.
If you only use the gun for target shooting its completly irrelevant if it has a plastic or a wooden stock
>Will my huge hands snag on some models?
Yes, try out every rifle before buying it
