got into an interesting debate at school on guns, specifically campus carry. After some debating, we came to an agreement that IF we could carry, there should be an "official school gun" and that's the only thing you can carry.
The gun we agreed on was a revolver because
>relativity cheap
>simple to use
>limited capacity so people "feel safe"
>no worries about jamming
The idea of an official campus gun stuck with me. If you HAD to pick something for that, what would it be?
>>
I will carry what I want. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.

Will this official gun be issued by the school to any student who wishes to carry? Or will funding be provided?
>>

No they aren't.
>simple to use
So are autos.
>limited capacity so people "feel safe"
This is a stupid point, but sure.
>no worries about jamming
Patently false and a malfunction will brick the gun.

An actually worth-a-shit revolver will be more expensive than a wondernine or equivalent at best.

>>
>>29525132
No. There's a clockwork mechanism that allows revolvers to function. Break almost any part and the gun usually locks up. Alternatively, cylinder doesn't line up with the barrel and if the firing pin even manages to hit the primer it fires the bullet halfway against a direct obstruction, blowing the gun up.

Now that said, actually breaking a decent modern revolver is unlikely unless you try to do so. They are reliable in that most malfunctions are caused by ammunition failing to cycle the gun, whereas revolvers don't rely on that in order to work. If you have a misfire you can just pull the trigger again, skipping the dud cartridge. Feeding issues are almost unheard of in that there is no magazine, feed lips or spring to fail. Occasionally on a very cheap one the cylinder will bind up from thermal expansion, but that means that the gun is just unsafe to fire in general. Also the casings can get stuck on ejection, but that is only after you have fired 5-7 times and are reloading, whereas on an automatic it would jam the gun immediately. Finally, automatics can be obstructed by someone grabbing the slide or pushing it out of battery. This actually happens a lot with hand to hand distance shooting. Usually one shot fires but the second fails to chamber. On a revolver the cylinder can be obstructed from rotation, but it would be a freak occurrence. Hammers can be obstructed from falling as well, but that's why DAO models with shrouded hammers exist.

In short revolvers do generally malfunction less in combat, but they do malfunction and in different ways. Sometimes less serious, sometimes more than automatics.

>Only one type of gun

Why not make a requirements list? I mean it's still stupid, but restricting it to a single model of gun, especially a single model of revolver, is basically the old "poor people shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves" trick.
>>
>>29524862
Okay, I'll play.

First off, a standard handgun is not a good idea. There are 6'7'' ubermensch who can comfortably handle a massive .44 Magnum revolver no problem, while at the same time there are people who are more comfortable with smaller 9mm or .380s. When it comes to self-defense, everyone has different needs.

>Relatively Cheap
Af we're talking about arming an entire school with a standard sidearm, or most of it, then we're definitely going to have to buy new. At that point you might as well buy semi auto handguns. That being said, I'm sure the manufacturers will give a discount for bulk purchases.

>Simple To Use
If we assume that this is actually happening, then there will absolutely be classes to teach them skills and exams to test competency. The college would definitely not allow just anyone to carry. If that's the case, then an afternoon with a semi handgun will be much more worthwhile than handing someone a revolver.

Also to note, semi autos are much easier to deal with. Empties are ejected and a new magazine can be inserted without much trouble. With revolvers you have to eject the shells yourself and the gun with moon clips or speed loaders, which, while perfectly fine, do tend to be a lot more fiddly compared to magazines. And don't even bother with revolvers if you're going to have them load each round individually.

>Limited Capacity so people "feel safe"

First off, what is "Limited Capacity?" Assuming we're still talking about revolvers here, why is six shots fine, but GAWD HAVE MERCY HE'S GOT... SEVEN! Why?

And that's not even mentioning the revolvers that have five, seven, or even ten shots. Why is six fine, but seven not? This point is pure bullshit.

>No Worries About Jamming
In some areas, sure. No stovepipes, no failure to extract, no failure to feed. But in exchange you've got a gun that requires more care (Lots of bent extractor rods, among others.) compared to a semi auto.

tl;dr

SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED

>>
>>29525283
>Break almost any part and the gun usually locks up
...yeah, same would happen on a semi auto too, and a lot of parts in the trigger groups of semi autos are more likely to break than those in revolvers due to them being moved by the force of the slide reciprocating when the gun is fired instead of by the user's finger. Also, the trigger groups of revolvers generally aren't much more complex than those of hammer fired semi auto pistols, if I remember correctly the Sig P226 has the same amount of moving parts in the trigger group as a S&W model 10 revolver.

>Alternatively, cylinder doesn't line up with the barrel and if the firing pin even manages to hit the primer it fires the bullet halfway against a direct obstruction, blowing the gun up
You aren't going t get the cylinder out of alignment to that extent without the gun failing to go off. Measuring the diameter of the primer pocket of a 9mm casing (uses standard small pistol primers) and the tip of the firing pin on my Nagant revolver, if the cartridge is any further out of position than .015" the firing pin will start hitting the casing and at .05" the firing pin would be half on the casing half on the primer with the gun failing to fire somewhere between those two points. Also, generally wear that would cause a revolver to go out of time is gradual and not something that would suddenly happen next time you need to use it unless you spend your afternoons spinning the cylinder followed by cocking the gun or something.

I can tell you my story of police confiscation: gun is taken late May, case finishes court in August with plea bargain for defendant once it's clear he's going to loose. Ask for gun back, receive form for return of property/release of evidence, then wait 7 to 10 business days for decision to be made. Receive the all clear from the court and arrange to pick up gun at local police department(small town only, most use evidence lock ups and you only show up by appointment). The only bad part of the experience was the wait.
