What was your first gun? Mine was a Marlin .22 from 1966, grandfather gave it to me when I was 8. Wish I still had it.

Post yours with pics.
>>
I dont have pics, but it was a 1911 clone

Some model of Rossi pump .22LR about 20 years ago.
Never sold it but it's buried way the fuck back in the back of the safe and I don't feel like digging it out.

I've never shot it. Don't want to risk it.

Would be fun as hell to load with shot and use it like a tiny 14 gauge shotgun-pistol.
>>
Weather by PA08 pump action shotgun.

I traded it because somehow they managed to fuck up a pump gun. It would jam once every 10 shots or so. Never trusted it for hunting because I didn't know if I could get a follow up shot.
>>
>>29523143
First gun given to me was a 10/22 with a target barrel given to me by my older brother. He never shot it anymore so he gave it to me.

First gun I bought was a Taurus Judge. Novelty wore off, and I recently traded it with some cash for a different gun.
>>
First gun that I ever owned is a Stevens break-action 10 guage, spray painted camo. Great duck/goose gun.

I don't own a gun yet. Thinking of actually building my first; pic related. I could either go with them or the Kentucky brand, which also has build-kit pistols. Black powder also means no paperwork to fill to own.

Thinking of buying this as my first: Auto-Ordnance's 100th annie set featuring a WWII Parkerized m1911 and a semi-auto version of the "tommy gun" ( Thompson 1927A-1 rifle ).

I wanted an Auto Ordinance Thompson in the worst way. Then a guy at the club bought one. Fit and finish was terrible. The stick magazine wouldn't lock in. The rear sight fell off. I realized I didn't want one that badly after all.

Similar story to mine, although I don't remember if it was my birthday or not. It was the first gun I ever bought with my own hard earned money, but pretty sure dad had to do the paperwork.
IIRC, I paid 200 bucks for the gun and 1100rds of remington golden bullets.
Unfortunately, it's the one gun in the collection I don't ever use now days. I have a 177 and 22 pellet rifle I use instead now because 22 prices are ridiculous IMO, other than pistol practice.
>>
So if you guys were going to recommend a first to somebody almost completely new to firearms what would you recommend and why? This shooter in particular would be 26 years old, between 5'9"-6'2" and ideally wants to be able to take deer. I've been thinking of a .30 carbine or maybe a rifle that fires pistol calibers but I don't know enough to make any sort of decision; I only know ( from lurking ) you guys seem to recommend people start with lower calibers so they don't develop a flinch.

High Standard Sport King .22 that my grandpappy gave me.

It's more or less similar to a Marlin model 60, but one of the old ones that takes .22LR, .22 long, or .22 short (high velocity)

I like it. It kills rabbits and other varmints dead, and the ability to shoot more than one type of .22 is fuckin' mint

>not mine but looks just like mine
>>
>>29524091
Go buy a 10/22 or other .22 rifle to git gud first. Then move on to something bigger. If you want to hunt deer, you'll need a full rifle caliber. Most states also have a minimum caliber requirement for hunting, and most pistol calibers, save the bigger magnums, are not enough to ethically hunt a deer.
>>
>>29524091
If it were 5 years ago, I'd say get 10/22.
Nowadays, I'd get a non cheapo pellet rifle or jump straight up to something bigger. 22 just isn't enough fun for the money you spend on ammo, and if hillary wins, have fun paying out the ass for 22lr for another 4-8 years.
>>
>>29524091
I'd start with a 22 and just learn off that as the ammo is cheap. I'm rather fond of the ruger american but there's thousands of 22 rifles which will do you just fine. Later on you can invest in a 30-06 or 270 for deer.
>>
>>29524178
.22 is still relatively cheap compared to most other calibers, it's just not as cheap as it used to be. 10 cents per round is still better than 20 for .223.
>>
>>29524200
>10 cents per round is still better than 20 for .223.
Yeah, but I get 5x as much fun shooting 223 vs 22lr per shot. Closer to 10x probably shooting 762xLiterallyAnything.
You see what I'm saying? It's not enough fun per dollar by a long shot.

So you all believe the .22 is good or best for a beginner? Could you also tell me what the difference between .22 and .30 carbine would be like? I only ask about the .30 carbine because I believe it is a legal round to hunt deer with in my state.

>>29524178
When you say "bigger" how big are you talking exactly?

>>29524150
They do make some rifles in .357 mag/.44 mag/.45 colt that are within my pricerange. What do you think of those?

>>29524180
So you like the Ruger American .22 rifles?

>>29523721
that anon mentioned building a black-powder rifle and not needing paperwork; is that reasonable for a first-time gun owner or would that caliber be too much?

>When you say "bigger" how big are you talking exactly?
I'm mostly talking about the common cartridges like 545x39, 556x45, 762x39, 308, or 762x54r. The .30 carbine you mentioned would work too, but that's not ideal deer hunting material.
I'd probably look into something 30cal though if you want to take deer, so 308 would be a good caliber to look at since hunting ammo is all over, and the regular fmj is really fun to shoot too.
There's a lot of hunting cartridges that would also work, but I like to stick to more common guns/ammo myself since it's proven to work and it's not 1-2 dollars a round to practice with.

>>29523143
Mine was a sporterized type 38 strangely enough.

The guy I bought it from said his grandfather brought it back from the pacific and sporterized it to hunt with. The mum is intact so I assume that was true.

1976 Marlin 336 in 30-30 I got in trad for a Trace Elliot 15" bass amp. Still have it. It is also the first gun I ever fired (at the age of 30).

Funny enough, I did just buy a 10/22 because it's cheaper to shoot and it feels almost mandatory to own one.
