As far as I know, when you're asleep you're still subconsciously aware of your surroundings (e.g. how you wake up at noises like an alarm clock or being shaken by someone), while when you're unconscious your senses are essentially shut down from stimulation. Wife and I were living in a small guest house behind a larger house in a really nice neighborhood. Million dollar houses, but close to the popular bar/restaurant area.
(Talking about the Market area in Charleston SC. I lived very close to the Harris Teeter).
Wife nodded off watching tv on couch, our Jack Russell snuggled up next to her.
I went upstairs to get ready for bed, but a few minutes into it, the dog goes crazy. I hear my wife say "who are you, what are you doing here?!"
I grab the closest gun (Kel-tec p380, my front pocket CC gun) and haul ass down stairs, only wearing a robe.
Wife looks freaked, holding dog who is sperging out. She says a really big guy (yeah yeah, 4u) who was shirtless just walked in and stared at her, then walked out.
I open the front door to find I'm 3 feet from a very tall white guy, only wearing cargo shorts and shoes. He's sweaty as hell, and literally steaming (very humid time of year).
Hie eyes are totally glassed over. I draw and tell him to step back now. He just stands there, gently swaying, and after a few seconds, utters "uh...don't shoot me, man".
what? I take a second to observe him, and realize he's a local college kid is is on acid or something, not sure what.
I have been this kid.
I "shoo" him down the drive way, and ask him where his friends were. He is literally incomprehensible. I ask him for his wallet, and he gives it to me. Yup, college kid, freshman.
Give him his wallet back and he wanders off. I go back inside and my wife is feverishly loading a magazine.
The next day we discover that he climbed on our trashcans (in an alley behind the property), went over a neighbors 8 foot wall, then climbed over the six foot high wall into the property I was living at. Once in the yard, he saw our door and decided to walk in.
No one hurt, and my wife learned to lock the door when bringing the dog back in.
