The manuals say force ratio of 1-3 is max allowable for an infantry unit. If fighting from cover or from a position of range and surprise the ratio gets larger. The training is the big part. Someone who competes and plinks a lot will shoot well, but will not know a whole lot about fighting.
Someone trained in ambushes, stalking, small unit tactics, stealth and can shoot moderately well while on the move and can use cover and concealment correctly stands a good chance of fucking over 3 guys. 5 is pushing it.

John Wick doesn't actually fight too many people in a straight fight in the movie. If you use cover and fight accordingly, you can win, because it becomes a continuous series of 1 versus 1 fights.
