What was the orginal concept by Stoner and his team? See this on the FAL too. Seems like s carry over SAWs and LMGs which are obviously much heavier and moved into position before being employed

This isn't 1964 anymore, gramps
I bet you also think dry firing is bad

In the early Fairchild/Armalite AR10 versions, the carry handle protected the cocking lever. So it's really just a legacy design where they didn't want to retool I bet.

>you know, soldiers spend 99% of their time with their gun just carrying the damn thing
>slings are kind of awkward too and take time to setup properly to keep the gun from moving if you're traveling
>if you don't secure it by sling in a proper way, it just bounces all over if you try to run
>this is especially annoying if your other hand is doing something like carrying an ammo can or such
Before mag fed weapons, most bolt rifles could just be gripping around the middle and be fairly stable if you were running and only had one hand to hold it. Without a carry handle, things like the FAL and AR are much more unwieldy in such situations.

Eh, you can carry an m16 in the same way but around the handguard instead. I also like to grab between mag well and handguard in that corner because it's fairly balanced.

Just watch the first Rambo movie.

He uses it as a carry handle.

If Rambo does it, then it is a carry handle.

It wasn't a carry handle originally.

Early AR pattern rifles, especially the 10s, had the charging handle on top of the receiver. The "handle" was there to protect the charging handle and hold the rear sight above it.

Would be pretty kekworthy design without the protector with bare charging handle, what if it acted as the rear sight?

>This is the carry handle
yes, right where it was designed to be.

i dont know how this meme started. Ive actually seen NCOs (not in the US military) carry M16s via the carry handle when they had to move a large amount of rifles at once.
