hey /k/unts
is marlin shit these days or is it all a meme? Im thinking about getting pic related. 1895 SBL 45-70.

Gonna use it as a woods gun, as i backpack around in some bear infested areas. I want a 45-70, but if there are any other suggestions that may work well, let me hear them.
>>
for backpacking just get a revolver in 44 magnum
>>
I just turned twenty, Can't buy handguns yet mate.
>>
>>29459404
I've shot newish ones in .22 and.... I think .45

They weren't mine, just some guy at ye range. Fun, he didn't have any complaints about them.
>>
>>29459404
Get a rossi in 44 magnum instead, taylor.
>>
>>29459468
then get a levergun in 44 magnum.
I can guarantee you'll get tired of packing a rifle on top of everything else when you're not even hunting or planning to use it.
>>
>>29459420
Kek good luck hitting shit from 25+ yards with that.

Is there any technical reason to prefer lever action over bolt action or semi auto, or is it all legal BS?
>>
>>29459404
Don't listen to those fags Op. 45-70 is goat caliber to kill bears and skinwalkers and marlins are better than rossi.
>>

>>
>>29459404
new ones are ok and by new i mean 2015-2016 new
not on the level of marlin marlin but functioning guns
everything between 2007-2014 is shit
>>
>>29459468
Isn't 45-70 considered a pistol round?

Take a look at Henry 45-70. You could also get a "Mare's leg" in .44 Magnum or even one of their lever-action rifles ( in carbine form too! ) in .44 Magnum or .45 colt. Besides, modern Henry rifles are the best lever-actions on the market.

Once you turn 21 get yerself a SAA and a Derringer to complete your cowboy look.

I had a 70s Marlin that was fantastic, but like every company they had some spotty ones here and there as well. Current marlins have a good chance of being as close to that as ever.

No, but you should be considered a mongoloid.
>>
>>29459404
What kind of bear?

Personally I'd go for a .357 or .44 lever action and then pair it with a revolver in the same calibre when you hit 21.

45-70 is a heavy hitter and over kill for most prey.

.45-70 is great. Injuns, bears, they die all the same.
>>
Pump action shotgun with slugs, carry different 12g ammo for small game also. Its a no brainer.
>>
>>29459635
Lever allows for faster followup shots than bolt and comes in round you won't find in semi.
>>
I'd give it a few years until marlin gets it's shit together. I've heard some promising reports that they are finally doing just that. Give it 2-5 years and production rifus should be passable again.

So, that's about a minute of barn door then?
>>
>>29459635
Most shooter usually find it easier to work a lever than a bolt, also quicker.

I love my 1895GS. I've only had one issue and that was loading the tube with three different kinds of 45-70. The Tube spring is also a bit stiff, as is the loading gate, but it's starting to wear in.

I love shooting it. I've shot full retard AKs and PKMs, but my Marlin is what gives me the most giggles.

They are pricey, and the ammo is pricey. But you can save a bit by reloading. It's something I NEED to start doing. There is also a shit load of different loads in 45-70 ranging from Cowboy action that feels like shooting a Nugget, to 530 grain arm killers. But it's so damn fun to shoot.

Do it OP.
>>
>>29460498
>oh no it was used in a movie it's a meme gun
It can kill bears and moose. I wouldn't trust anything that couldn't as a raptor wrangler.
>>
>>29463218
How expensive are we talking, $1/round?
>>
>>29459404
Around the middle half of 2014 they started making them decent (keep in mind, marlins were always the budget alternative to say henry and winchester, so quality wasnt gid tier to begin with)
But most new ones you see, or used ones stamed JM or whatever should be as good as a marlin is gonna be.
dont get me wrong, i love marlins, i might go henry if it wasnt front tube loaded.
That being said i would suggest the base model, or the one with he synthetic stock (both in 18" full tube) trust me, those buckhorns are way better than ghost rings, and you can still slap a base and an optic on if you want.
>>
>>29459650
This, except I heard they got their shit together around 2012, but not 100% sure on that. Marlins are built pretty damn stout and can handle the hot stuff that makes .45-70's capability worth it.
>>
>>29464576
It was midway through 2014.
In early 2013, they stopped production on all firearms, fixed the bugs on one model, released it, then moved on, as you see they only have about half their lever guns into production as of today.
and im pretty sure someone in here said post 2007 is bad, that is incorrect, remlin bought the company in 07, but didnt fire the workers, and move the shop untill halfway through 09, so there are some 09s that are just fine.
>>
A glorious day of no trip faggotry.

>>29459404
To be completely honest with you, bear spray and bear bells will give you more protection than a rifle. It's also a lot lighter. Get a gun you like and bring it for plinking or hunting, but realistically it's not what you want for bear defence.

Marlin owner here (pic related)
Mines a 336 model from ~2014 according to the serial. Never had a single issue with it. Just make sure you inspect the gun in person before purchase, they're good rifles.

Also lever action is sexy as fuck.
>>
>>29464864
What sort of accuracy do you get with the 336? That's my one concern vs. bolt action.
>>
>>29464885
Why would accuracy concern you?
Why would you think lever would be less accurate then a bolt?
>>
>>29464919
>Why would accuracy concern you?
Because I'm a nogunz looking at buying a 336 and everything I've read about lever actions is "hurr they can't hit the broad side of a barn". I'm not sure how founded any of that is.
>Why would you think lever would be less accurate then a bolt?
Word of mouth, essentially. I'm pretty dumb about this so far.
>>
>>29464864

Dude I can see from here the stock isn't fitted properly and the checkering isn't deep enough.

The article is right >29459984

07-09 we're not just fine, there we're plenty of spotty marlins throughout the decades. I saw that as someone that loves and has owned/handled them. There is no magic number or JM stamp that means it'll be a great gun. Early build dates or very recent ones are the best you can hope for.
>>
>>29464919
>>29464926

Probably because you never hear anyone really bragging about their sub moa groups with lever guns, which generally doesn't happen for various reason. Two piece stocks, barrel bands/mag supports, factory sights and the usual chamberings being the culprits.

But that isn't what lever guns are for and their practical accuracy is completely adequate. Now with some of the modern loads and modern cartridges thats changing
>>
>>29465096
I guess that was my point when I asked why he was concerned about accuracy.

Not that accuracy is not important but that Most any rifle will be plenty accurate for it's intended purpose.

Will a 336 run 1 moa at 500 meters? probably not.
will it shoot Minute of white tail at 500 meters?
Yep.
I dont know what my 336 does on paper but if I take it innawoods with me I know if I see a dear I've got a 90%+ chance of dropping it.

Unless you're just target shooting from a bench accuracy is a stupid thing to worry about.

Hey /k/omrades, I don't have any experience or much knowledge of lever guns, but it's next on my shopping list of since-childhood-fetish-wanted guns.

I constantly see lever guns with more "rounded" and enlarged levers, my question is, does that have some kind of advantage over the more classical "rectangular" shaped lever? Ergonomics or something?

I've always wanted a "classical cowboy" lever gun and I'm thinking of getting a straight lever (instead of that awkward looking rounded lever) action rifle in .22lr, since .22lr is the optimal and cheapest plinking cartridge available for me.

I'm looking for something fairly cheap too.

And I reside in Canada.

Any suggestions?

its so you can do this
thats about it

They used to be pretty good.
Then Remington took over and they went to shit.
Now they got their shit sorted out again and are pretty good again.

Still rough around the edges though. I had to work on mine a lot to get it comfy.
>>
>>29465245

those are for use with heavy gloves in cold climate areas.
>>
>>29465245
The big doofy rounded levers are so you can use them with gloves or mittens on. Unless you're in Toronto or coastal BC, you should probably get them.

Original accuracy-tard here again. Thanks, that's the sort of accuracy and power comparison I was looking for.

On an unrelated note, thank fucking god we got proper CSS back. The white was eye burning compared to my usual Tomorrow theme.
>>
>>29465277
If you have huge hands, or even say, if you need XL gloves, wearing those gloves can be difficult to get it into the standard loop.
which sucks, since big loops are ugly as sin.

I've seen reports of and picture of win94s and 336s that'll hold 1" at 100 but everybody knows the purpose of a lever gun and they're perfectly capable of that job. That being said the Browning BLR may as well exist solely to give the finger to guys that say lever guns aren't accurate.

Have Little "AWB Utility rifle" as the owner put it
