In Israel, they do it with fighter jets.

I present the Rohrbach Ro II, a fairly standard 1920s flying boat with the addition of removable sails to allow the plane to return to port if the engine failed or the fuel reserves ran out. I'm not sure if this counts as a modification, but it's certainly something.

From the paint scheme it looks like it was a NASA tech demonstrator. They were probably studying the pros/cons of putting canards on US planes. Considering that no US plane beyond that has ever had canards, I suspect they found they weren't worth the effort.

This is actually an awesome idea. Assuming the sails were light, it would increase the effective range of the aircraft by a fuckload. Range was a hugely limiting factor for planes back then.

Look at the tail art. It had a fly-by-wire system as well as the canards. This plane is probably part of what led to the F-16.
>>
>>29440221
From wikipedia
YF-4E
"One of the original YRF-4C prototypes was converted into the YF-4E. The YF-4E was used in the development of the F-4E fighter as well as in fly-by-wire Precision Aircraft Control Technology (PACT) and Control Configured Vehicle (CCV) test programs. Three conversions."
>>
>>29442521

this is what wiki says about them:

"The Rockwell B-1 Lancer shows small front fin surfaces as part of an active vibration damping system that reduces significant aerodynamic buffeting during high-speed, low altitude flight. This buffeting is a leading cause of crew fatigue and reduced airframe life. As placed in front of the plane, these surfaces are described as "canard vanes" [35] or "canard fins"."

Nothing. That was just a NASA test plane that the USAF never asked Lockheed to build in bulk.
>>

>>
>>29443826
I think it was just general research on how delta wings performed on modern aircraft, since we haven't had a delta wing fighter in over 40 years, unless you count a Tomcat with the wings back.
>>
>>29443826
Test results basicly.

They test meny different consepts on planes to see if they perform better/worse for potensial upgrades or future designs.

If I remember correctly the F-16XL had much better capability as a bomb truck as it had more lift and weapon stations, but it suffered bad in speed and general fighter performance.

The Israelis are the funniest people on earth.
(Mirage 5, but still.)
>Rising tensions in the Middle East led French President Charles de Gaulle to embargo the Israeli Mirage 5s on 3 June 1967.
>The Mirages continued to roll off the production line, even though they were embargoed, and by 1968 the batch was complete and the Israelis had provided final payments.

>In late 1969, the Israelis, who had pilots in France testing the aircraft, requested that the aircraft be transferred to Corsica, in theory to allow them to continue flight training during the winter.
>The French government became suspicious when the Israelis also tried to obtain long-range fuel tanks and cancelled the move.

I'd have loved to have seen their faces if Israel had succeeded in getting fuel tanks and flying the planes home. Taking lessons from Rhodesia's 707s.

There's a fun story about those.

>the first 35D draken that was selected to be modified and shipped to austria
>these new versions were called J35OE
>this all happened during one of the first test flights with the J35OE
>Normally, they wouldve flied from Linköping to Öland (just a stretch above Sweden) and then do a twirl around Sweden and land again in Linköping
>this example had very rudimentary navigation equipment as it wasnt done but was painted in those austrian colours, and an austrian pilot flew with it to test it
>however, after reaching Öland (travelling eastwards, base operations notices that the plane is continuing eastwards at high speeds
>austrian pilot wants to fly over the baltic, copilot and test flight officer said alright
>suddenly, the copilot notices that they're flying over land
>base operations have been observing the plane crossing into Latvia (ie. Soviet Union) and has been trying to contact them with no luck
>luckily, Russians are slow and take about 15 minutes to scramble into the air, at which point the copilots have already taken over controls and bolted back into sweden

I just keep thinking about the tfw when an austrian plane comes from sweden, violates USSR air space and some austrian ambassador having to seriously take a formal complaint, unknowing of these events

>sergei, are you high?

Nothing. It was just competing with the F-15E, which was better in every way.

>>29443826
>>29443874
It started out as a project to analyze a new wing planform for the F-16, and once the strike fighter competition was over the two F-16XLs were handed off to NASA for various research programs. One of the programs involved some kind of boundary layer control system where a glove was fitted over the leading edge of one of the wings. During those tests, one of the F-16XLs managed to supercruise (albeit unintentionally)

Probably went to full throttle and just didn't expect it to actually break the sound barrier without going to afterburner.

To be fair, it wasn't exactly surprising - the whole reason GD came up with that new wing in the first place was to see if they could make the F-16 supercruise.
