5.45x39 is really fun in the AR 15 platform.
If you do go with it you will need a heavy trigger spring and enhanced fireing pin.Other wise your gonna have alot of light primer strikes.

Fucking pussy, make it in 20/50.

That said, I've always liked the idea of an ar in .220 swift. I know its not on your list, but maybe think about that?
>>
If you want a nice short rifle for general use, I'd say 300blk. It's a little expensive, but cheaper than .308 and getting gradually cheaper.

If you want something that does well at longer ranges, go 6.5 Grendel. Wolf makes ammo for reasonable prices, and there's some really good loads for long range shooting. If you're going for a full size rifle I'd go with 6.5
>>
I'd go 308 because id then be able to use the same bullet to reload 7.62x39
>>
>>29439607
>.308 ammo can be loaded with .311
Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt that something called .308 is gonna be the extra .003" larger that a 7.62x39 round is.

.308 you fuggen retard, reach out and touch someone at 800 yards over and over again with a ~$900 rifle, its a no brainer
>>
>>29437593
What is the rifle going to be for? You can't choose a caliber without knowing its purpose.
>>
6.5 Grendel is a great intermediate cartridge; very accurate, recoil's not bad, you didn't need the last 5 rounds in your magazine anyway, and it has enough power for people to hunt with. I've only shot paper, but people do hunt with it; Alexander Arms even offers a gucci 6.5 AR in Cryptek highlander.

How does the supersonic .300 Blackout compare to the 7.62x39? Is it worse or the same?
>>
>>29439837
This is getting a little into the technical side, but supersonic .300blk does better than x39 because of the ballistic coefficient and the abundance of really good loads. Its main advantage is that it works in your standard AR with nothing but a new barrel and gas tube.

>>
>>29439513

>>
>>29437593

7.62x39 AR's usually suck, .300blk is for people that were unhappy paying less for their ammunition, or with it having a flat trajectory. If you need a snowflake caliber, I say .25-45 Sharps or 6.5 Grendel. Then you've got an interesting machine.

Better still, get an AR10 in .308. Simpler, more affordable than all the other options, hits the hardest.

I don't think you're understanding. .308 takes .308 diameter bullets. 7.62x39 takes .311 diameter bullets. They are non interchangeable, unless you feel like using undersized bullets in your 7.62x39

5.56 for plinking
6.8spc for SBR/HD/hunting
6.5 grendel for hunting/long range
7.62x39 is for slavguns
7.62x40WT is expensive
25-40 sharps is neat
.277 wolverine is neat (6.8 pill in 5.56 brass)
6.5 mpc is neat

You can squeezebore up to about 0.004" without significantly increasing chamber pressure. This is actually standard practice with cast bullets and common with plated bullets. Has a side effect of occasionally improving accuracy (though I doubt it will in this case, 99.99% of .311 bullets are junk)

Also you can run the bullets through a .308" sizing die to squeeze them down before loading.
>>
>>29439880
It's also very marginally faster with similar weight bullets (about 50fps faster with 125gr bullets than x39 is with 123gr bullets), and does significantly better out of <10" barrels.

Recoils less too due to using about a third of the powder of x39.
>>
>>29440081
>and it's nonstandardized
No longer true. The Armalite AR10 pattern is dead as fuck, even Armalite is now using the DPMS LR308 pattern.

Can someone explain to me why I can find bonded bullets in boutique calibers like 300blk and 6.8 SPC for less money than I can find bonded 5.56?

A quick jump to ammoseek shows roughly $.60 per round compared to $.75 for 5.56. Based off of supply, shouldn't this be the other way around?
