There are two different length stocks. I prefer the original over the longer nato as I'm a smaller guy. That being said, you can get an adjustable stock for the ak too.
For me, the ak is just more fun to shoot. I've never had a problem with my ak(700something rounds) or ar(400something) and they have both been fielded in less than desirable conditions.

Funny, I thought that these rifles were intended for very different operations (if not that, atleast) different methods of integration into combat. AR-15s are meant to be more precise with a smaller round; at distances between 50- 450 meters. Yes, 5.56 is a good round prior to that but with over penetration, fragmentation and its speed being the advantage of the round it's hard to say it's better than its heavier competitors; 300 BLK, 7.62 x 39, etc
The AK is not a precision platform, nor was it intended to be. It works well in CQB ranges, all the way up to 150 w/ ease (it can be accurate up to 400; but as far as ballistics go it arrives with much less power and essentially it is being lobbed after 160). It is a MUCH cheaper variable to the AR platform, which helped it gain approval from a military looking to arm as many soldiers as possible with as little maintenance as possible. The AK is the perfect Joe Infantry rifle; hard working, simple in build/design, great round for punching through most cover (urban, jungle, foliage, and easy to learn on.
The AR is a DSM's rifle; it may need more maintenance on the bench and in between heavy use but it is much more effective at long ranges with shorter intervals (ability of the shooter to aim, fire and reset) than the AK; hence why it costs more money.
In summary, in the field both of these rifles work side by side well enough that there isn't a noticeable different in reliablity; the major difference is the rounds most of these platforms are chambered in; and the intent of the designer. Yes, Ivan, your rifle is good. Yes, John, your rifle is good. Now, children, keep measuring your cocks and I'm sure you'll both realize neither of you are getting laid.
I always thought a rifle is only as good as the person behind it. As in keeping it maintained and how to use it properly.
