and I have tried a lot of other systems, bare stones, wet stones, lanskys jig, etc. it beats them all IMO.
there is also a great selection of aftermarket stones for it. I have 160 grit all the way up to 10k grit now. the stones are cheap enough that when they get bowled out I just buy a new one instead of reflattening.

If you plan on getting a diamond plate to keep the waterstone(s) flat, then I would recommend considering Sigma Power Select II waterstones.

They are basically the fastest cutting waterstones on the market and were designed to cut high speed steels (e.g. ZDP, HAP40, etc.).
>>
>>29351234

Generally, most people would be better served by learning to freehand on full sized stones because once you have learned, sharpening individual knives is massively faster than with a guided system.

Also, if you use a reasonable low edge angle, you can use pasted strops or ceramic rod sharpers to create micro-bevels that give a much cleaner, keener apex and are much less work to maintain that a single bevel edge.

For example, I am currently sharpening my knives on a 1,000 grit waterstone in 1-2 minutes and then stropping them on 5 micron diamond paste on a hanging denim strop.

This gives a convex micro-bevel that will do true 90/90/90 degree push cuts through whole sheets of phonebook paper in less than 5 minutes on a pocket knife.

Continued stropping on the diamond compound allows the micro bevel to maintained for a couple of weeks through EDC type use.

Failure in every other area of life, culminating in a desperate need to lord something over others, no matter how inconsequential. Consider the implications:

>derp derp man is NOTHING without a GOOD blade

What this means is, he can look at Chad, who's a star QB on full scholarship and who's currently using this weaboos dream girl as a casual cum dumpster, and say that he's really in fact less of a man because he doesn't spastically clip a $150 folder on to his jeans as he leaves the locker room. Furthermore, he can judge filthy casuals - people that do EDC a knife, possibly using it for cooler things than he does and more often, but don't have the means or the inclination to replace something that cuts stuff with something that cuts stuff for more money.

/k/ is rife with people like this when it comes to every kind of gear, but knifefags tend to be the worst.

The handguard is loose. There's like a .5mm gap between the end of the handguard and the beginning of the knife. Might just take the black anodized of and sliver sodden the gap to make it tight. The small wiggle on the guard irks me.

It's awesome. Once you get practiced in using its wave feature, it is much faster-deploying than even an auto from the pocket. From there, you can kill whatever you want. It is just stupidly sharp and smooth. The lock is a bitch to press down though, which is actually a good thing. The thing took off the the skin on the tip of my ring finger when I was playing with it the first night I got it. So if you ever get one, be very aware of the speed it closes because it's a guillotine. I'd recommend when it comes time to put the Espada away, you can easily do it one handed by pressing the tip down onto your pants, depressing the lock and breaking it a little, and reajusting your grip to just the scales while you close it. My only other gripe is that the aluminum scratches very easily, whereas the blade never scratches. Don't think it can't handle small tasks too, because it is great at opening up mail and prepping food at home... but I wouldn't suggest using it publicly as an edc because it's just too intimidating for people. So, I got it because it is the sexiest defensive knife imo. My logic is that you will never (hopefully) use a defensive knife or be able to take it out in public, so you might as well get one that looks good so you at least have something to be 'mirin when you're home. Also, it is a heavy son of a bitch, but the most comfortable knife in hand.

I know that sounds great, but because edge wear is massively non-linear and they were cutting rope, that test basically tells you that CTS-XHP will keep its "working edge" for a very long time.

Basically, edge wear approximates a 1/X graph, where the his sharpness is lost fairly quickly and then the low sharpness lasts for a very long time.

This is especially so when slicing soft abrasive materials like rope because that type of work is unlikely to micro-chip or micro-rolling the apex much, meaning that slow wear is the primary blunting mechanism.

If they had at least also tested push cutting pine wood and indicated how sharp both knives where after, say, ~50 and ~250 cuts, the comparison would be more useful for people who sharpen their knives regularly (and therefore live in the vertical part of the curve).

Can someone explain why a $20 kershaw walmart knife is so terrible? I've been using one for basic-ass knife tasks for a while now, it's fine. I just don't see what the 200 bucks gets you. A knife really isn't an effective melee weapon, why not spend the money on a good gun?

Sorry if this sounds like b8, I just don't udnerstand and you are free to educate me. I will bookmark my post so I can read later, I aprpeciate any replies.
>>
>>29358113

Edge retention and durability due to more expensive and better materials.

It really is a case of diminishing returns however. Maybe you'll get an edge tht stays shaving sharp 10% or 20% longer, but is it worth paying 500% more? The tasks you can achieve with either knife will in the end be identical.

I'm with you, I love my kershaw chill.

Nothing wrong with a cheap EDC if that's what suits you. Some of us are enthusiasts and collectors so we are a bit more into it than that. Obviously as with anything, the more you're willing to pay the higher quality you will get. And I'd have to disagree with your statement that a knife isn't a good melee weapon. If you're not carrying a pistol it'll be your only weapon and there are many knives out there made for defense.
>>
>>29358553
you're wrong about your 10-20% crap. $200 is the golden price for knives. anything past that tends to be diminishing returns and people just pay because they like the designs.
it's like saying but anon, why did you get the $8,000 car when there's a $600 beater available? don't you know you can just replace it when it breaks?

>your knives

Lol no
>>
>>29358723
Implying you could afford a LTWK

>>
>>29358113

basically look at it this way:

you have two knives. They are identical, but one is a limited edition 1 of 20 with rare walrus ivory handle scales.

Some people will pay extra for that.

Now imagine the "special" knife uses a better steel, has a better balance and profile - all little things, and like has been said already - diminishing returns kick in really fast.

realistically, $50 is all you need to pay for a very good knife. Delica 4 and Izula 2 are both ~$67-ish on bladehq (last I checked), and they are "big league" knives.

If you want a better knife, you will pay a lot more for a little more, and the higher you go, the more you will pay.

I carry knives in the 130-230 dollar range myself, but that's me (well, other people as well). You don't *need* a knife that expensive. No one needs a Ferrari to drive (people buy them anyways, and they're not wrong, but that's another story)

besides the fact that >>29359840 is just shitposting, but he's quoting part of my old post, so it happens to be right.

those two knives, specifically the delica 4 and esee izula 2 is what I consider the benchmark for edc folders and fixed blades respectively.

There are cheaper alternatives (try kershaw link), but point for point, I don't think you can beat those two. Once you take price out of the equation, there are better (but more expensive), or cheaper (but not as good) options, but that's life.

Anyway - spyderco (or spydergoy as it's known here, popularised by baby's first trollposters) makes some really decent knives (has been for years, hell Robocop, aka Peter Weller used one in Screamers, and I remember another from Needful Things - with Von Sydow playing the Devil. Hardly a recommendation, but goes to show spydies go way back.

And what I said about geometry stands - 3/32 is really good for an edc knife.

goy is not a slur.

It literally means "not a jew".

For example, highly orthodox jewish families would sometimes hire a szabesgoj (don't know the english translation for it) - kind of like a maid or servant, that would do work around the house on a saturday (the sabbath), since orthodox Jews are forbidden from working on a sabbath.

Just an interesting tidbit.

>>29360413

because a fixed blade is better than a folder at everything except being very concealable (I mean you really have to go out of your way with the dress code to be unable to discretely carry a 3'' fixed blade), and sheeple friendly.

Literally everything in a folder - the pocket clip, deployment, locking mechanism - is just making up for the fact that the knife is made of (very) separate pieces, instead of being a fixed blade.
