Maybe.

No. Sometimes the rumor works better than the truth.

>definitive answer

The entire point is a direct answer not matter what it is - does not have the same impact of the mystery and conspiracy that surrounds the ignorant, goddamn

Tl;dr doesn't matter

Who is he?
What did he do?

Git out newfag, this thread is not for casuals like you.
>>
>>29331087
I think that the real guy said that he didn't actually do it, but he was prepared to if it came to it.
>>
>>29331427
According to some stories from way back the real Speirs and a small group of his men (like several guys at most) came across some surrendering Krauts just after D-day. Not being able to taken them along, they shot em.

i thought there was an episode where Winters said there was no doubt that he did it, just that the army was running out of good leaders like him to do anything about it

Best part of the show is when he delivers that message.. And then he comes back. Like a powerful wizard.

I haven't watched band of brothers in maybe a year. who is this guy and what is this claim that he may or may not have done?
>>

Captian Speirs, don't take it if he offers you a cigarette
>>
Probably. You hear about stuff like that happening a lot in ww2 vet interviews.

I always thought it was mainly happening in the pacific theater, but it happened in the European theater a lot too after the Malmedy massacre
>>
>>29331557
That actually happened didn't it? I remember the guy being interviewed about it
>>
>>29332021
He implied in the show that it was just a rumour
>>
Just read the books...

He did do it.

He also killed one of his sergeants who was about to get his squad into an ally artillerie barage and wasn't answering his calls to stop.
>>
>>29332036
Yeah, the other guys were in awe about it. I wish they had found one of those old Germans to interview about it.
>>
US troops got away with plenty of war crimes, looting and plundering during Overlord. They killed and raped plenty of French people during the invasion too. That whole Greatest Generation shit is just a myth.
>>
>>29332103
The Normandy French weren't so cheerful like you say. On top of that a lot of people died in the D-Day bombings. ~50k
>>
>>29332103
The French and Danish women were more than happy to show their gratitude from what I hear, killing the French though...not something that happened enough to be mentioned. Once they got to Germany it was a different story, but that was enemy territory.

We did some pretty messed up stuff to the Japs, but they seriously had it coming.
>>
>>29332103
Everyone commited atrocities in ww2
>>
>>29332182
With slight differences in magnitude
>>
>>29332139

Well between 55 and 70k French were killed by allies. More than 3k rapes were reported to authorities which considering the period and circonstences isn't even the tip of the iceberg.

>>29332139

In Paris, since it had it pretty easy the whole war and their comparatively "modern" moeurs, no question about it but in rural Normandy and Brittany I certainly doubt so.

>>29332182

That's true. I just find it odd people still have that distorded and idealized view of US troops in Europe. Hollywood for the most part still perpetuates that myth in movies and shows.
>>
>>29332228
>Well between 55 and 70k French were killed by allies.
Strategic bombing, mostly. Germany was using their factories and we intended to put them out of commission...and usually hit everything around them instead. Not exactly our proudest moment.

Hello /pol/
>>29331087
Winters seriously believed he did it, and I'm inclined to believe him. Spiers was someone you just didn't want to fuck with.
>>
>>29332139
How deluded are you?
>>
>Speirs parachuted into Normandy on 6 June 1944 (or D-Day) and quickly met with fellow troops after landing. He assembled a small group of soldiers to assist during the Brecourt Manor Assault, where he single-handedly captured the fourth 105mm howitzer. Speirs' platoon spent the night of 6 June being shuffled in position with other platoons as the company was arranged for battle to begin early the next morning. A rolling artillery barrage had been coordinated in support of the ground assault on the morning of 7 June; to initiate the attack, artillery fire was adjusted back towards American lines before moving forward in increments. Speirs ordered his platoon to hold position until the fire was completed to prevent serious casualties and friendly fire. One of his squad leaders ignored the orders due to fatigue and disorientation; after his order was ignored a second time, Speirs shot the sergeant between the eyes, then promptly reported the incident to the company commander, Captain Jerre S. Gross. Gross was killed in combat the next day and the incident was not pursued.

>Winters assessed Speirs as being one of the finest combat officers in the battalion. He wrote in his memoirs that Speirs had worked hard to earn a reputation as a killer and had often killed for shock value. Winters stated that Speirs was alleged on one occasion to have killed six German prisoners of war with a Thompson submachinegun and that the battalion leadership must have been aware of the allegations, but chose to ignore the charges because of the pressing need to retain qualified combat leaders. Winters concluded that in today's army, Speirs would have been court-martialed and charged with atrocities, but at the time officers like Speirs were too valuable because they were not afraid to engage the enemy.

idk, I remember my grandpappy had an original print of a post-raid damage assessment similar to pic to the one I attached. Participated in bombing Cologne as a bombardier, claimed that when he saw they flattened everything but the cathedral that it was the proudest moment of his life.
>>
>>29333243
Who did he fly with? My great-grandfather was also a bombardier in a B-24 with the 8th, I still have some pictures he took of several of his targets. He didn't have much regrets except for one smaller town that was basically flattened due to its close proximity to a munitions depot.

>>29333300
379th Bomb Group. Still have some of his training manuals and the like
>>
>>29333317
I'm pretty certain my great-grandfather was in the 389th bomb group based upon what I know.

>"we dared the Americans to send their CO through our lines twice and they did it! Absolute madmen."
>>
>>29332252
The US relied on daytime bombing at greater risk to their crews.

The brits flew an night and just dropped shit everywhere as they could no longer afford to lose planes. Was nowhere near as accurate. Really should have just fucked off and instead focused on helping escort or something.
>>
>>29333243
As someone who has been to Köln and loves it, I have to say, the allies bombing it to the ground paved the way for them to rebuilding a beautiful city
>>
I think he did it, but he is said to have only told one man the truth, and they are both dead, so we more than likely will never truly know.
>>
>>29331379
You are probably a troll but, watch Band of Brothers, then you will understand.
>>
>>29331564
You really gotta change that, brother.
>>
>>29333485
Bullshit.

The British flew primarily at night because they'd developed technology and tactics that allowed them to do so with radar targeting, radio navigation and pathfinders.

The US flew primarily during the day because their technology lay in bomb sights and doctrine around aircraft with heavy defensive armaments.

To say it's as retarded and simplistic as "The British didn't want to lose aircraft so dropped munitions everywhere" is an affront.
