The Germans actually occupied the channel islands (I.e. the little islands between mainland UK and France) in WWII. Hitler figures they night provide a nice staging area for the invasion of Britain. Later in the war it was also assumed that the islands would provide advance warning of any Allied invasion fleet, as Hitler figured they would stop to liberate the Isles on the way. However, in the event the Allies completely ignored the channel islands, simply sailing past them. They remained occupied while Europe was being liberated. The relationship between German troops and British residents on the isles was generally good (albeit frosty) and the islands weren't liberated until the Germans surrendered of their own accord with no blood shed. Not a bad way for a German soldier to spend the war, living on a wee island doing bugger all!

They were, just not in the Pacific. 442th Infantry was almost all Japanese and they were deployed to Europe. It's usually cited to have a 314% casualty rate due to the fact that the unit was issued 9,486 purple hearts for 3,000 personnel in theater. Official KIA/WIA/MIA counts put it more at 93% which is still really high.

I remembered watching that the first time when i was a kid. I had watched WW2 films up until then it hit me when I realized this was war and those men probably died.
One thing I've noticed in every photo and video in this thread, is this incredible sense of loneliness. Every photo feels like it's happening in the middle of nowhere, with only the living people in the photo/video being involved. No matter how many dead are present, it feels like the dead are almost forgotten.
It's a terrifying feeling. It almost feels like hopelessness and abandonment.

Thanks for the insight. I read a book about the Ottoman Siege of Constantinople. That battle is millennia removed from the origins you're describing, yet still hold pretty consistent. Both Constantine XI and his adversary, Mehmet II, were in turns merciful and cruel during that conflict, but the Greek conduct of the war was governed by tradition and hierarchy with his various commanders having great sway over strategy and conduct. The Ottoman side was under the total authoritarian control of The Sultan; on a whim, he could send a whole battalion to certain death just to probe the Greek line for weakness.
Tangentially related, but these two sides were not strictly religious. Some of the best soldiers Mehmet II had were Christian vassals who liked the (relative) religious freedom under Ottoman rule and didn't care for the Orthodox Church. The most loyal, die hard soldiers Constantinople had were Turkish (Not out of the goodness of their hearts, mind. They were a pretender to Mehmet's throne and his followers. They knew that, if captured, they would all be tortured to death).
