Before I joined I always considered ARs and by extensions M4s to be outdated and unreliable. After 3 years of using old M16s and seeing the toy-like M4 being carried around I joined a new unit and got one of my own. Shit was tight and light. That machine never once jammed on me, even when I would burst hundreds of blanks through it.

The M4 is a good service rifle that could be made great with some simple, incremental product improvement.

>As bolts wear down replace them with an improved version like the LMT enhanced
>As barrels get shot out replace them with slightly wider non M203 cut barrels, replace sights with flip up fronts
>As rails get trashed replace them with free floating guards
>As charging handles get chewed up replace them with an ambi model
>Field ammunition that is worth a fuck like Mk. 262

Right there is a path to the best service rifle you can find.

Army: the way we fight is changing,
we need a new gun. We have done some research, lots of research in fact and this is our short list.
Pentagon: ok, write up what you want and we will do the science thing and the testing thing.
USMC: we want to have a say.
Pentagon: nope. You get cast offs like always.
USAF: What colours will it come in?
Army: this is what we want, reliable, rugged, accurate, easy to use and adaptable. In that order.
Pentagon: we reserve the right to add cheep at the top.
Army: grumble grumble.
Pentagon: here it is.
Army: wait, don't we get a say in what you buy us?
Pentagon: we already signed the contract for five hundred thousand of them and well there is this senator that we owed a favour to and than Colt has this legal sword of Damocles hanging over us from the last contract fuck up.
Army: this is the same rifle as we took to Viet nam. The rifle keeps jamming, brakes when you look at it wrong and can't hit a man at three hundred yards. It was not even on the short list.
Pentagon: but we are getting five of these for the price of four of those rifles that you had on your short list.
Army: grumble.
USAF: black is too threatening.
USMC: yo bob, get all the old rifles from the army and recondition them.
Pentagon: um, guys.
USAF: I resent being called a guy
Pentagon: that sight you wanted, well it turns out that we did not do the science and testing thing properly. Sorry, spent so much money on dinners for Colt reps that we did not have enough to pay a decent contractor to test the sights.
Army: oh, great. Now what do we do?
USMC:We don't use that sight anyway.
USAF: you mean the sight may hurt some one?
Pentagon: no, no, it is just that the sight is not waterproof.
Army: oh goody. This is just so good.
Pentagon: stop complaining. You have a new rifle. You have a new sight.
Army: The rifle is a carbine. And it's shit. The sight is just as bad and you are sending us back to Afghanistan.

Daly reminder that only one service rifle in the world has muzzle brake. Ak-74. Only Ak-74 can be effectively utilised with automatic fire. This is why it is called avtomat. All other so-called assault rifles are effectively semi-automatic carbines when not employed from bipod.

laughingsluts.jpg

Colt lists their M4 at 6.11lbs with their obnoxious carry handle.
>>
>>29298567
The M16 is the best.
The M4 is mediocre unless converted to .300BLK, in which case it becomes great.
>>
>>29300011

That one seems to have much heavier barrel profile than SCAR.
>>
>>29298567
duh
>>
>>29299072
but that requires intelligent thought every time a rifle goes in for maintenance.

no way in hell that would ever happen with something government funded.
>>
>>29298586
>>29298753

I do not know much about either the Sig 550 or the SCAR, other than that they both shoot under 2 moa, which is plenty for a service rifle.

Does zeroing with the handgaurds on sandbags fuck up the POI as much as the AR? Because that shit is annoying as hell.
>>
>>29298775
SCAR is really good, but way overpriced.
The 416 is also overpriced, but does nothing an M16A2 or C7A1 doesn't do for much cheaper.

>>29299789
Dust and sand isn't as big of a problem as you think, the AR is very well enclosed.

>>29299953
You can run an AR silly filthy if you grease/lube the internals like fuck.
>>
>>29299437
>posts C8s not 416
>>
>>29300156
I heard that was only an issue with the plastic handguards and not the free float ones. But then again, it stands to reason that zeroing on a sandbag would change your POI for any weapon cause each shot would deform the sand.
>>
>>29298567
Someone here clearly never used a full barreled micr tavor
>>
>>29300317

Any non-floated AR handguard will exhibit POI shifts from the sling or a rest, barring a stupidly thick barrel. But barring an SPR or the like, that's every single M4/M16 in use unless the military is letting its armorers remove delta rings.

With any free floated rifle, if the sand rest deformed enough to alter your POI, then your POA would shift to match as well.
>>
>>29299801
Saved
>>
>29300337
I thought M4s used KAC free float handguards now... Also that was sort of my suspicion, that the POA would shift.
>>
>>29300450

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since those require swapping out the front sight and the barrel but, I think those are only on the SPR and SAM-R.
>>
>>29300474

Speaking of the SAM-R, any reason why the Luepold CQ-B is roughly 2x the price of other 1-4x when it only offers 1-3x?

I wouldn't say "best", but rather "optimal".
Better guns already exist: the scar. Some fanboys will even claim such title for the mini (or micro?) tavor.
And still, the m4 will retain is position due to price/performance, universally favored design, available quantity and extensive after market.
The reason the US army (and others as well) stick to it, is purely a logistical one.

Sure, that's better, whatever.

To be fair though, the M4 is a disgusting abortion.

They should make an M4a2 with an aluminum free float modular rail, low profile lightweight gas block, and flip down front and rear sights.

Or at least just a free float quadrail and flip down sights if nothing else.
