ppsh 43 or grease gun
if anything the grease gun was the only one not immediately obsolete after the war. america continued using it it until the 90s. flipinos still use it but they are poor and cant really replace it with anything.

Would you like to know why America continued to use until the 90's
Because it was issued to guys who didn't really need a gun but had to be issued one. My dad was a Huey pilot in Vietnam and he was issued one as well. He told me he could fire it once and let off the trigger and it would just finish out the mag on its own.
>>

Kek. His was probably built in the 40's and had well over 10,000 rounds through it I'm sure. I have no idea seeing a sear or bolt stop wear out on a gun made as a cheap alternative to something else, especially 25+ years after it was made

I used to work with someone that was a medic during the Gulf War.

He was in NatGuard armor unit with M60 still. All he had was a M9. While walking through the motorpool, he says a tank crewman calls him over. The tanker says if his pistol was all he had. He says yes. So the tanker disappears in the tank for a minute. Comes back up with a grease gun and dozen full mags. Tanker gives him the grease gun and ammo.

Obviously the handheld BRRRRTTTT-41 PPsH.
Germans loved using captured ones, and soviets outfitted entire infantry divisions with them. So much firepower from a group of infantry that it lead to the germans introducing the assault rifle. It's basically the Mosin-Nagant or AK47 of the SMG world.

I feel like the M3 only lasted as long as it did because it never had a official replacement in the TO&E. I say this because other weapons that supplemented it like the M2 Carbine were fazed out entirely due to being obsolete in the infantry role, but left a gap that needed to be filled in the PDW role. My guess is that military planners were simply lazy.

Good choice for individual soldier, but poor choice for a nation. Too expensive & slow to manufacture and heavy. Hence does not that well in "best overall" competition.

Best overall: PPS-43 - reliable, easy to use & maintain, compact, light, very easy to manufacture and yet about as cheap as Sten.
>>
>>29273921
>So much firepower...

Assuming that the drum mags would have really worked reliably - they did not, due to which the Soviets introduced freakishly long 35-round box-mag, which one cannot load to full capacity without special tool.

Also - heavier, more expensive & more complicated (milled receiver etc) to manufacture than PPS-43.

I rather like the M3, if it weren't for the issues with the magazines, I'd say it was the best SMG of WWII. It was cheap and easy to produce, the cyclic rate was nice and low, and the .45 ACP lends itself to good terminal ballistics with ball ammunition.

PPSH-41's couldn't exchange magazines between guns because of shit manufacturing
The PPSH-41 would always jam with a drum magazine, so much so veterans would use stick magazines
The PPSH-41 uses a machinegun style trigger system that increases the likelihood of getting a runaway gun. Especially when the high fire rate requires trigger pinching.

R50 - radius of the circle where 50% bullets hits

Table 26 - prone postion short burst fire 100 meters range
PPSH-41 - R100=78 centimeters
PPS-43 - 84
AK-47 - 103

Table 27 - standing postion short burst fire 100 meters range
PPSH-41 - R100=122-125 centimeters (different trials same 1947 year)
PPS-43 - 176
AK-47 - 246-296
AKM slant muzzle comp 196-238

BTW soviets were very angry that AK refused to shoot bursts as accurate as PPSH but could not solve this problem.
>>
In terms of quality, tied between the MP40 and Thompson. They both ticked a lot of boxes but in different methods.

Overall effectiveness goes to PPSH-43. The red monster would arm so many troops with them that urban fighting as a joke to them. The midrange firepower going from drum to stick mags after that blows was just unmatched. But this boils down to who can throw more lead than the other guy. The burp gun excelled at its design purpose.

Fuck no.

Just because 43 is a higher number than 41 doesn't make it better.

In fact the PPD was probably better than the PPsh but the latter was better for scaled production.

The MP40 was nicely made by a little too big and heavy for a weak 9 Para gun.

Left one is 10 shots to 100m
Right one 50 rounds in short burst to 100m
Radius of the 10 is 5cm. All shot with support
