There are a whole lot of small, young pine trees (6-10cm diameter) and similarly sized eucalyptus trees. The area is a plantation left to go feral and then half-arsedly designated as a nature reserve. Locals walk their dogs and jog on the closest bit on the roads, but deeper in there are very few people around. A few hobos sleep in the bush and some assholes dump stuff near the edges but there are overgrown parts where hundreds of young trees have grown around large trees, too dense to move through without clearing a path. The area is quite hilly, with a steep sided small valley. I was thinking i could find a densely grown patch against a slope, cut my way in and then tunnel in horizontally using local timber for supports. Create a short tunnel i could relax in while innawoods. Furnish it with shit i find lying around the area (things ive found scattered over the area include an old steamer trunk, a small bean bag-like seat, and a really fucked up couch that could maybe be put back into working order.)
Maybe even widen out the tunnel into a large chamber.

So the long form of it is the soil in the area I would dig does the following things:
When it dries up it likes to make big cracks in the ground in something. Generally speaking each section of the grid of dirt is rougly 12 inches across with an inch between each bit.
It's also rather shallow, I haven't actually done core samples, but I'd assume the deepest areas are maybe 3 to 4 feet of soil before hitting either a gravel pack, or sandstone or shale.
Oddly enough, despite the high amounts of sandstone, it's mostly a clay/silt mix in the soil.

I have some pictures at home from an exploration me and a couple of buddies did of an abandoned WWII era molybdenum mine. It was a really interesting exploration, and there were a lot of side passages. We didn't map out the whole thing.
It was pretty sketchy though. There were a lot of really, really weird mineral growths on the walls of various colors. There was 4-18 inches of water covering the floor wherever you walked and it was totally opaque, making it impossible to see what you were putting your feet on. The surface had this ~1" thick crust on it that actually made it look like solid ground until you tried to put weight on it.
We found evidence of an old explosives storage room with some dupont paperwork still present, as well as a larger room with an old elevator shaft. There were 13 levels marked on the pegboard next to it. We must have been on maybe the third level down, because it went both directions. Exploring downward would be impossible due to it being flooded. The upper levels we have yet to explore because the only two ways up were either the shaft, or a ramped area that at one time had cart tracks. We tried to scale there but our rope broke so we called it a day.
There was also a blocked off tunnel with three crossed carved into the wall, as well as names and a date from 1914. Pretty sketchy.

Oh, a little more on those weird deposits. There were black, yellow, and blue crystalline deposits growing on walls in various parts of the cave. We chipped some off for samples.
The blue deposits were the strangest. They were translucent and aquamarine in color. They could be chipped off the walls and were pretty solid, but would crumble under say, a boot. We tried to wash one sample off and whatever it was is water soluble because it started to melt. Another sample that we left outside in the sun turned bright white and disintegrated into a powder.
So, who knows how much damage was done to our nervous systems through whatever nasty shit we absorbed through our skin from wading through the water.

Thanks for the tips on the monitor. Here's those photos I promised.
First, the access point as seen from the top of the hill the mine is built into. You can see where we're parked, and the bridge we had to walk across to get to the entrance. You can't see it great in this photo, but that small ravine is no less than 40 feet deep. The road was over 15 miles of un-maintained dirt road.

There are a number of foundation remnants or stone piles around the area from the structures that once stood. We looked up the history and apparently there was a small "town" here to support the mining operations. If I remember by numbers correctly it was like 300 people at peak.

Now we're getting into the meat of it. This tunnel wound back into the mountain for quite awhile. It turned a little one way or another, and went down / up a bit, but was mostly straight.
There were a few short offshoots that we passed, but none of them went far until we got fairly deep. Water covering the whole floor. In one place, it seemed like there was a shaft going down, but invisible because of the opaque water. We fortunately found it by probing ahead with a spear one of our group was carrying, and were able to skirt the edge of the tunnel to get by it.

May be toxic to the kidneys and liver after repeated exposure. Generally though it's just an irritant to the skin and eyes.
Also the crystals grow fairly fast given a high enough concentration in solution.. so since it took over 70 years to get to that point, it can't be too high of a concentrate. It won't turn you sterile though.

Any suggestions for keeping an unnaground area dry besides just digging above the waterline? Would coating the walls with concrete help? Digging down a few extra feet and laying gravel on the floor? I have a pretty heavy clay soil for the most part, if that helps.
