Which cartridge would you consider to be the minimum necessary to take down one of these motherfuckers?

Also, while hunting on public land, is it illegal to just leave them where they drop?
>>

why are you hunting if your just going to leave the meat?

22 hornet to the brain would be enough
243 is more than enough to the brain or good lung/heart

you could definitely kill it if you put a .22 lr through its eye, its all about placement...
also how long do you want to search for the animal once it runs off? seconds? minutes? hours?

theres far more to consider than trying to be a fucking pigsniper, leave that to one eyed quaca
>>
>>29242142
hitting its tiny brain with a .22 would be hard even if you hit it in the eye. you would have to get the angle just right. i would shoot for the lungs/heart and track it till it died like a deer.

They carry trichinosis but so does farm raised pork. So long as you don't eat pork rare its not an issue.

Literal scum.

Must be nice to be such a bourgeois fuck that you'll just leave good meat rotting rather than put it on the table.

To answer your question a lot of people hunt hog with .223 but I don't go smaller than 7.62x39 for stuff that size.
>>
Honestly 7.62x39 is literally perfect to remove squeal with.
>>
Smaller bullets like 5.56 and .223 are popular because people can take their AR's out hunting and operate on pigs. Often times its too light and requires a few shots.

Intermediate cartridges with bigger bullets are really common and more effective on hogs. Things like .243, ,30-30, .300 BLK, and 7.62x39 are good, heavier hitting rounds. Something like .35 Remington would be perfect.

Then you have full-sized rifles, .270, .30-06, .308, etc. Anything like this is popular because you know the power it's got behind it.

Finally, people like their big bores. .45-70, .444 Marlin, .44 Magnum, things like that have a wallop but usually a slower rate of fire.
>>
>>29242388
Boar is tasty, just as is most meat. It's the risk of nasty parasites and the like people try to avoid

Minimum:
>.223/5.56 for smaller bacon.
>.308/7.62 for the bigger fuckers.

The reason being is that as pigs mature, they develop a plating around their head and neck. This plating is meant to protect them when they get in fights. The older the pig, the more plating, muscle, fat and bone you will have to penetrate to hit vitals.

I shot a 70lb pig a couple days ago square in the shoulder with a 55g .223, but the fucker got up and kept running. I brained it with a second shot to kill it. When I was field dressing it, I found out that I disintegrated one of its lungs with my first shot. Pigs are tough fuckers.

>>
>>29242459
The only diseases you have to worry about are also present in farm pigs.

If you bring enough gun and kill it clean the meat won't taste like shit. It's people pumping a bunch of .223 into a freaked-out animal that leads to meat tasting like shit.
>>
>>29242438

Feral pigs are an ecological disaster. Killing them whenever you find them, if you need meat or not, is a right thinking person's duty.

Got a story for you OP
>be living in Texas
>me and best friend graduate and join police academy
>one day he asks me if I wanted to go hog hunting
>hey anon would you help my family kill some hogs
>goes years without telling me his family has fuck huge land
>1000 acres
>be living in apartments most of my life
>felt like simba when dad tells him the sun touches everything he owns
>had a couple milsurp but preferred to hunt with semi auto
>friends dad gives us 50 dollars per hog we kill
Fast forward a couple days
>bring Bulgarian AK 74 with 6 mags and about 500 rounds
>after a couple minutes of walking we see at least ten full sized hogs
>a couple hours later we have at least 25 heads
>end of the day we have 112 hogs
>friends dad gave me ~3k for all the hogs

His family was pretty loaded and very generous, we kept and cooked some of the clean meat then donated the rest of the good meat to some food banks.

But to answer your question OP I did a fairly good job taking down hogs with 5.45, some took more than 1 shot when I wasn't going for the head or heart. My best friend was using his AR10 and had no problem taking them down

Have a story about one of the hogs

Pigs get a stink when they get older. Their meat will smell and taste off if they eat a bunch of bullshit. This is why I tend to shoot smaller pigs: they usually taste better.

>The only diseases you have to worry about are also present in farm pigs.

Holy shit, that's wrong.

Feral hogs carry several diseases that aren't present in farm hog populations, or when they are present are grounds for imminently destroying the animal and quarantining any it might have infected.

They pretty much all have a rabies-like infection that kills dogs after weeks of agonizing itching and rabbit fever, not to mention parasites.

I've got one from my Tae Kwon Do instructor:
>out hunting deer in East Texas with wife and kids
>spot hog rooting around in the underbrush
>daughter takes a potshot with her .50 BP muzzleloader, hits it in the shoulder but fails to kill it
>hog takes off running
>finish deer hunt, decide to track down hog to finish it off
>search with daughter for two hours, find nothing
>head back to trail to return to camp
>hog is collapsed on the trail
>tell daughter to go get a gun from the others
>hog hears and starts running
>did I mention he's from Florida?
>START CHASING THE FUCKING HOG AND JUMP ON TOP OF IT
>ohshitniggerwhatareyoudoing.jpeg
>somehow hang on to hog for long enough to pull out pocket knife
>start stabbing the fucker in the side with 3" knife
>hog finally collapses
>follow the trail of trashed underbrush back to the original trail
>walk back to camp

Apparently the muzzle loader shot had broken the hog's shoulder, which slowed it down enough that he was able to chase it down.
>inb4 TKD is faggotry
I don't take it for self-defense, I take it for fun. The guy's quite pro-gun too, his philosophy on the usefulness of martial arts is that a gun's always going to beat martial arts for self-defence but that some training will help in most situations not involving weapons.

5.56 seems to be popular as a starting point. I'd go bigger, maybe .300 blk. It's pretty popular and works well with suppressors. Plus all you need is a new upper and then you can use normal 5.56 lower with normal 5.56 mags.

>>29242188
Yes they are more prone but as long as you don't eat the brain and cook the meat to well done you should be fine. Male hogs taste better with some sort of citrus brine, unless you like the gamey flavor (which gets stronger with age) in which case season to taste.

Handguns are less popular regarding hog hunting. Usually they're exclusively a backup for a charging boar.

You pretty much have three tiers:
Your standard pressure cartridges like 9x19, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, they can all kill a pig but expect to hit it a lot. Pretty much only a sidearm.

Dedicated hunting handguns, namely revolvers and rifle-chambered handguns, will do the trick best. .357, .41, .44, .454, and .500 all hit hard and could even substitute for a rifle. Even a Blackhawk in .30 Carbine wouldn't be a terrible choice.

Then you have your "magnum pistol" rounds. 10mm, .357 Sig, 7.62 Tok, they're hot, sure, but only if they're loaded hot. The common misconception is that factory ammo puts it on par with magnum rounds, which is just untrue. The fact is that unless you load them specially, they're a lot closer to .40 S&W power than they are magnum. Loading them up really hot will give you more power but lose controllability. The idea of a Glock 40 blasting fifteen rounds of essentially .41 Magnum would be great if you recognize that you have to really fire up a pill to come close and then you have heavier recoil too. Novelty for the most part, but they have a niche.

.22LR from a rifle to the forehead (or ear side on) at 50 yards or less would be my minimum; 40 grain at 1200 FPS (solid).

Killed many larger ones here in outback Oz with such.

If I have to shoot at 100 yards, I'll use .22WMR with 40 grain FMJs shooting for the same spot.

If over 100 yards, I'll use .223 Rem. or .22-250 Rem. and hit the same spot.

All one shot drops.

If 300 yards, I'll shoot them in the chest with a .308-class rifle, though they're run a little before dropping dead.

I've killed a lot and eaten a lot of pork and bacon from them. Free food here in outback Oz.

Who the hell cares? You can at least buy +1000j ammo for the 10mm. You can't say that about any other rimless cartridge that you mentioned.

>when reloading any of the other cartridges can reach or exceed that level anyway
Handloading isn't fucking magic. You have to stay within max pressure parameters or risk catastrophic failure. Saying that any of them can be loaded to produce 1000j in a 5 inch barrel is simply wrong. Feel free to prove me wrong with pics. More likely you'll be down a gun and some fingers.

Was thinking about that, why not just use rocks and gravel? That way you won't fuck anything up walking out there afterwards.

Rocks would make sense. Not *really* shrapnel, it's just disguising the charge.

not very much i bet. I would be more concerned about keeping it under a certain weight so that x number of people can reset it. i would also imagine thats why its doesnt fall straight down.

I hope everyone noticed the little white on on the left after the thing falls.

>>29249784
There's probably some technicality they could shove up your ass if you add any type of shrapnel to it. The rocks just make clean up easier since it's just rocks and therefore no cleaning needed except for the corpses.

Because land owners are dumbshits.
Feral Pigs were extinct on public land in California (and are still quite rare, the pigs avoid it because they're smart) in the 80s back when the population was still small enough to wipe out with serious trapping. Liberal California of course didn't want to hurt the poor piggies so the State Government was useless, and land owners would harbor pigs on their property and charge a few to hunt them on their land.
Pig populations established corridors between lands not open to hunters and spread state wide. Eventually California completely capitulated and the state named them a game species complete with take limits.

It actually really pisses me off. Their are pigs now in Oregon thanks to California's utter ineptitude.

A single pack of wolves range over a much wider area than coyotes. In addition to pushing out competing coyote packs, there is some evidence that the wolf packs would result in lower domesticated animal deaths over time.

Meanwhile, domestic hogs continue to amass huge agricultural damages across my state, and their numbers are growing. If the wolves kill less cattle than the coyotes, and they keep the hog population down, that's a win\win.

the thinig about boars is they reproduce faster than you can kill them anyway. you kill 1 out of 3 in the litter of young pigs, and the other 2 have like 20 babies within 2 months. they are a big problem in texas and california
>>
>>29253029
Whatever man, don't let a diagnosis tell you what you can and can't do. Know a lot of people who think that way and a few who try anyway.
Do what you can if only to keep busy.
Alternatively, if you aren't physically disabled, work under the table somewhere local they won't abuse you. I know a guy in a similar boat who works at the local paintball field and uses the money to finance an ebay business to supplement the disability which covers his basic needs.

>>29253117
Pretty much what the target stands will be. If I can really get them selling I might be able to actually try and get off the damn disability altogether which really is the end goal. Biggest problem with disability and other benefits is they keep you in the hole unless you cheat.
>>
>>29253211
Yeah all you'd really need to do it would be a wirefeed welder, an oxy-acetelene torch, and some hand tools. As far as the hand tremors, I'd build jigs that you could lay on the material and drag the mig gun/ oxy torch along so you wouldn't need to freehand it. A little business like that could do ok, it definitely would cost shit to run.

>>29253089
Will boars from a massacred group be able to join up with another group? If they can, you can do what some other countries have done to eradicate goats.

>encounter herd via helicopter
>capture one female, massacre the others
>fit some sort of tracking device to the survivor and let it go
>survivor joins another herd
>roll back in with helicopters to repeat process

Apparently it was very effective in the Galapagos islands, though I'm assuming goats and boars have different social tendencies.
>>
I'm honestly surprised the military doesn't use boar extermination to practice against moving targets with live ammo. Imagine how great that would be for guys in attack choppers to practice shooting fleeing goatfuckers by practicing on pigs.
