Using the M4 and AK-74M as examples:
They both fire a small-caliber intermediate cartridge, which trades some terminal ballistics for being able to carry more ammo.
They are both carbines (14.5" for M4, 16.3" for AK-74M) with great reliability, provided they have proper maintenance, and have an effective range of about 500 meters.
They're both designed to be mass-produced and built so the trained monkeys who use them have to put a fair amount of effort into breaking them.
They are both designed for ease of use, with their lighter weight making them easier to carry around, and their shorter length and folding/collapsible stocks allowing them to be more easily maneuvered in vehicles and buildings.
The users of both rifles spend 99% of their time doing things other than firing their weapon, and are generally unconcerned with accuracy in combat situations.
