I read about an engagement in the first gulf war where a platoon of USMC M60s engaged and destroyed over 50 T-72s of the Iraqi Republican Guard at the Kuwait National Airport. That is quite the lopsided battle!
What makes this tank so much worse than everything else?
Soviet allies tend to rely on centralized control of the military, promotion based on political reliability over merit, and suppression of criticism or bad news.

Look at when the tanks where used Arab vs Arab (shit vs shit) and you'll see the T-72 does pretty well.
It's an impressive tank for it's weight but it's cramped and ammo is stored below the crew with no real protection.

It's a reliable war workhorse. When it came from production line, it was very well-done and well-protected machine. In Gulf war they faced vehicles designed to kill t72. Outcome was obv.
What makes it so much worse? Same what makes it best. His universality. NATO uses tanks as designated AT weapon. Soviets school intended to use tanks as universal weapon against any type of ground targets. That's why main ammunition of tank was HEAT and HE-FRAG shells. That gives you sufficient anti infantry capabilities. That gives you chance to lose turret if you get hit. Main meme against T-72 was created because he faced opponents with much newer technology and tactics. In 70th it was beats.

That's the gulf war. Shows the great difference between US and Iraq. Not just equipment (which is grealty different) but the level of skill.

Usually most nations operate older models such as the T-72M1 which is from 1979. It is usually outclassed by modern tanks and usually the modern tanks are operated by western crew who usually are simply better then their third world counterpart.
Even the T-72B obr 1985 or T-72B obr 1989 which is better then T-72M1 or T-72A are also outclassed (but not that bad as the T-72M1 and T-72A) by modern western counterpart.
It only gets better when we are at the very latest T-72 varients but they are also somewhat outclassed.
For it's era, it was a fantastic tank whose main advantage was good sloped armor, mobility, and very low silhouette. Put that bitch behind defilade, and it's almost impossible to actually hit at long distances.
It was a good match to the M60 tank. Ultimately it comes down to which crew is better, meaning shooter straighter, quicker, farther, etc
