Was Full Metal Jacket an accurate depiction of the tactics used in the Vietnam war?
this thread is going places
I dunno

>>29209092
Can you repeat the question?
>>29208939
Everyone on k but me is an underage that has never used a gun and anything saying otherwise is a lie. So how the fuck are we supposed to know.
>>29209109

and you're not so big.

Life is unfair, anon.
I've had multiple Vietnam vets tell me that Forest Gump is BY FAR, the most realistic Vietnam movie, despite not being a Vietnam movie.
However, they also said that the first half of FMJ was realistic in the depiction of boot camp. Especially how Gunny goes from a complete ass reaming demon from hell, to a strict but loving father figure about half way through.
>>29209282
Considering he was an actual drill sergeant, that doesn't surprise me.
>>29208939
I dont think so.
The enemy sniper had a single guy pinned down by fire. They knew the general direction of the fire and had, like, fifty smoke grenades on them.
Cowboy should have broken the squad into two teams, Alpha throws smoke and moves into rescue the downed Marine while the machine gunner puts down suppressive fire.
Bravo team moves to flank and clear the sniper hideout.
Cowboy was a moron.
>>29209515
Pretty much, but aside from just saying it's a movie, it's really just an amalgamation of two different parts in the book. Except I think Animal wastes Cowboy instead of having more Marines get killed trying to save him.
The props were war-accurate
The tactics, not as much.
>tfw just watched this yesterday
>just watched forrest gump a few days before that

Is that you John Wayne?
>>29209580
Fuck... nevermind, it was Joker.

The fact Cowboy was a moron does not subtract from the realism of the movie.
I am pretty sure the American army has always been packed with morons.
>>29209774
is that a deleted scene?
>>29209167
for you
>she say no boom boom with soul brother
Nah, not very realistic at all.
>>29209774
wtf?
I thought joker and cowboy were bros?
>>29210066
No, it's an excerpt from The Short-timers by Gustav Hasford. That was the basis for Full Metal Jacket.
>>29210236
They were, Joker just had a fucked up way of dealing with it. Right before that happened, Cowboy killed Alice(Eightball) and Doc Jay because they were fucked up and he didn't want anybody else to risk going out to get them. Cowboy ended up getting shot and Animal Mother was about to charge out with the entire squad to get him.

HE WAS DRILL INSTRUCTOR, MAGGOT!
What was the diameter of the rounds they used in their m14s again?
Also, they were using cast lead right?
>>29212200
seven... six... two.. millimeter...
full... metal... jacket...
>>29212356
Thanks, I always forget that
My dad was a Marine and fought in 'Nam. He said FMJ was the closest to his experience(minus the super woman gook sniper)
>>29208939
I had a business teacher in highschool that was a Marine lieutenant in Vietnam, and he said that We were Soldiers was the most accurate depiction of the war he had seen.
Surprised the fuck out of me.
>>29212803
How many jelly donuts did he smuggle into the barracks?
>>29212839
idk he was like a buck fifty back in 68-69
He also said his drill sergeants didn't hit anyone.
>>29212837
I heard that same thing from a guy who was an officer. I heard the opposite from guys who were enlisted. They filmed that movie in fucking North Carolina, it looked nothing like Vietnam.
>>29212980
>filmed that movie in fucking North Carolina, it looked nothing like Vietnam.
I thought it looked nothing like Vietnam as well until I eventually figured out that Vietnam is a lot more than just jungle. I don't mean that in a snotty way either.
>>29208939
Not really. Sauce is my pops. Hotel 2/5 was actually his unit in vietnam. He had a few criticisms, basically your typical hollywood war flick stuff. Soldiers bunched up way too tight in formation, unpractical weapons handling, squad patrols wouldn't be that isolated, ect, ect...

I AM
IN A WORLD
OF SHIT
>>29208939
I would say so since Kubrick did meticulous research for his films.
