So in the days of the police revolver (and by extension I guess civilians buying revolvers for defense because "hey if they're good enough for cops they're good enough for me") did .38 Special have any serious alternatives (like 9mm has .40 S&W, .45 ACP and .357 SIG). I know .357 Magnum was used but it was considered just a powerup for the most part that was used for certain tasks and roles.

Police are civilians.

I have no idea, but I fucking loved Rocko's Modern Life.

Apart from jumping up to a 44spl/44mag, not particularly.

Some people still used .38 S&W, but really the us market wasn't as saturated with "our proprietary round is 5% more effective at X" as it is now
>>
I heard a first hand account of plain clothes units in Chicago having people who carried S&W model 25s and 29s. It's fairly rare. There was also the 41 magnum that was developed but it's also mostly too powerful to be an effective combat load unless loaded fairly mildly.

depends on the decade. up until the early 1900s every new model number had some new cartridge, but for more valid reasons then.

They still make them in .32 Magnum, right?
>>
Friend of the family carried a .32-20 revolver on duty.

Robert Johnson wrote a whole song about how the .32-20 was better than the .38spl

Great song. Great singer.
>>
didn't some police use 9mm and .45 ACP revolvers?
>>
>>29162523
you know thay autism you guys keep talking about is one of the driving forces of the industry right

>>29164737
.45s like the 1917 and beyond yeah. maybe a few 9mm here and there ut not likely
>>
>>29161589
41 magnum
45 long colt
38 super
etc etc
>>
.44spl/magnum
.32 H&R
.32 Colt
.38LC
.32 S&W
.41LC
I'm sure there's more, but .38/.357 and .44 were the most popular, so they're the ones that stuck around.

I mean they used .45acp at least as early as 1917
>>
>>29161589
In the olde dayes o' yore they also used .32 colt because it was 'more accurate' than .38 special. It's worth noting the Chinese police killed thousands of people in the 1920's with .32 revolvers.

That's about it those.
