I just bought this commercial Luger for a decent price but I want some tips on how to remove the thick rust.

>buy Luger for $500
>little finish left with light surface rust
>all matching numbers

I have already used some CLP and a rag but some of the thick shit remains. Obviously I don't plan on taking steel wool or anything abrasive to it
>>
Take some 0000 steel wool and what ever gun oil you use and do very light passes, this shouldn't leave any scratches on the metal. You won't get all of it but you will remove any active surface rust.

Mr Clean Magic eraser and lemon juice to neutralize the rust

0000 steel wool.
If used it before on some rusty guns, just put some oil on it and rub lightly.
It will take off the rust an leave the finish, just take your time and go slowly until all the rust is gone.
>>
If you see any paint hit it with some 80 grit sandpaper.

Kek that isn't me. I'm not taking fucking steel wool to a Luger. I've thought about dipping it in an ultrasonic with wd40

0000 steel wool and gun oil isn't going to ruin your Luger OP, just take light passes and the rust will come off
>>
>>29159242

never ever use wd-40 on a gun, jesus fucking christ. WD-40 is not a lubricant is a water displacement that frees stuck parts.

It also displaces all that good gun oil that protects the firearm from rust. use a good gun oil and be done with it. Hell even canola or olive oil is better then wd-40. I prefer Corrosion Block its a blue colored marine oil that leaves a teflon film on metal and is made to keep brass and engine parts from corroding in a salt water enviroment. It also seems to deactivate iron oxide rust through some chemical in it. I am not sure if its a iron phosphate conversion or what but it tends to turn faint surface rust black and prevents it from continuing to rust.

I can't think of another gun oil that I can buy in a gallon tub to dump into an ultrasonic. Plus I can just recoat it when I pull it from the ultrasonic
>>
Just duracoat it

update OP?

>ultrasonic cleaner
>on a gun
No. Pull it apart, use mineral spirits or denatured alcohol and a rag to wipe it off, and spray every part with Hoppes No. 9 gun old before reassembling.

If it works for coated parts on mills, it'll work on a Luger.
But I fucking swear. No WD40.
It doesn't work as gun oil or rust preventative.

Does it work? Don't touch it.

That doesn't look like rust, OP.
If so, then just oil it and leave it.

>>29162818
Who cares? Spray paint comes off easily, it's not permanent.

what this anon said>>29162945
Quit being finnicky and leave it alone, its only gonna get more rare as retards continue to buttfuck theirs away from factory/natural finish
>>
>>29162960
How the fuck would you get it off without taking off the finish as well?
>>
>>29163045
Any gun cleaning solvent will work fine.

>>29162601
As someone going to gunsmithing school I have had my instructors tell me that the best way to remove surface rust without damaging the firearm both physically and historically is with 0000 steel wool with gun oil.
>>
>>29161422
You paid real money for that?

literally fine

no reason to fuck with it

here's my hi power that looks to be similar condition for reference (it doesn't rust)
>>
>>29159061
honestly? Scrub the shit outta it from every angle with a bronze/brass brush with moderate pressure. It will turn gold color, but it will wipe off with pressure and patience. Dont do anything else to it besides slathering on oil. No 4x0 steel wool, no "Rust remover", no polishing compound, NOTHING.

>>29159105
This will kill the Bluing, and you know it faggot.

>>29161422
ugh...... thats one ugly bitch. Still, dont destroy it.

>>29162700
brass brush the shit outta it, wipe it down, and then take off the wood and drop it in a bucket of car oil.
>>
>>29162700
Holy fuck that is shit. You should just strip the bluing off of it and buy some brownells bluing solution.
